XO, Kitty has finally arrived and there is a lot to love about the first season of Netflix’s teen comedy which continues to build upon the universe created in Netflix’s To All The Boys movie franchise.

In the new series, Kitty Song Covey’s perspective on relationships is challenged when she relocates to another country to be with her long-distance boyfriend Dae. As she navigates this new phase of her life, Kitty gradually discovers that matters of the heart can be much more intricate and bewildering when she is personally invested.

Across the first season, Kitty and Dae’s relationship is at the forefront as the writers take the pair on quite an unexpected journey and flesh out the characters in a way that was not previously able to be done in the To All the Boys movies.

While the show does an amazing job of standing on its own, there is one crucial element from the movies that is helpful to know before watching which is the background on how Kitty and Dae first met. So how exactly did the lovebirds first meet one another?

How did Kitty and Dae meet? (XO, Kitty spoilers)

Kitty and Dae first meet in the third and final movie in Netflix’s To All the Boys movie franchise, To All The Boys: Always and Forever, in a meet-cute moment that unfolds early in the movie on the Namsan Tower and the Love Lock Bridge.

At the beginning of To All The Boys: Always and Forever, Kitty joins her sisters and dad for a family vacation to Seoul, Korea for spring break. During the trip, they take in as many sights as possible and fully embrace the Korean culture. Their adventures eventually lead them to the Namsan Tower and the Love Lock Bridge, which their mother visited the summer she first started dating their dad.

As we learn, Kitty’s mom hung a lock on the bridge but never told their dad what she had written on the back of the lock. Their mission is to use the photo she snapped during the visit to uncover the lock, which they successfully do after a tireless search.

To commemorate the moment, their dad says he wants to get a picture of them in the same spot their mom took the photo but Kitty insists he should be in the photo as well. She goes up to a young man to ask him to take the photo and sparks quickly fly. The boy introduces himself to Kitty as Dae and they share a sweet meet-cute moment that sparks their relationship and friendship — which ultimately paves the way for the events of XO, Kitty.
