It’s no secret that we all love a good, enthralling crime series with an air of mystery. Okay, maybe not all of us, but a decent portion of binge-watchers are partial to a story that unfolds with twists and turns until the ultimate ending. Take the recent success of The Undoing and The Flight Attendant. Netflix, too, has enjoyed its share of watercooler fare, not unlike the lost potential of Seven Seconds.
When white police officer Peter Jablonski (Beau Knapp) accidentally hits and injures Black teenager Brenton Butler with his car, he rushes to have his fellow officers on the forces to cover up the boy’s death. In the wake of Jablonski’s cover up, racial tensions regarding the case boil over as injustice rises to the surface of the Butler family’s reaction to their loss.
Seven Seconds comes from creator Veena Sud, who also developed the AMC and Netflix original series The Killing. The series earned mostly positive reception upon premiere in February 2018 and Regina King won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. Even though Seven Seconds works as a one-and-done limited series, the potential was there to bring it back for another series as an anthology crime drama.
