Returns to past properties are becoming all the more popular in the age of streaming. Just look at the future rollout of Paramount+ that includes revivals of past favorites iCarly, Frasier, Rugrats and more than you could ever imagine. But sometimes, those reaches for comforting nostalgia don’t necessarily amount to future success, just like Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Based on characters in the 1982 film The Dark Crystal by Jim Henson, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance acts as a prequel to the cult classic movie. The series centers on a trio of Gelflings named Rian (Taron Edgerton), Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Brea (Anya Taylor-Joy) as they kickstart a rebellion to save their planet from the dangerous Skeksis rulers.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was met with a fair amount of praise amid its debut and holds an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series even went on to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program in September 2020 before ultimately being canceled by Netflix. Its demise isn’t particularly surprising, given that The Dark Crystal franchise seems all but destined to be a cult favorite for fans to discover for years to come.
