Ten years ago, vampires were the thing. But these days, entertainment featuring the fantastical creatures is hit or miss. Netflix learned that not everything can be as big as Twilight, The Vampire Diaries or Buffy the Vampire Slayer last year with the cancellation of the short-lived sci-fi horror drama V Wars. They say vampires can live forever, but these ones… well, they didn’t.
Based on the anthology series and comic book of the same name by Jonathan Maberry, V Wars stars Ian Somerhalder (who’s perhaps best known for playing a vampire on television) as Dr. Luther Swann. The physician and scientist and his friend, Michael Fayne (Adrian Holmes), tackle a crisis involving an outbreak that produces two factions and leads to the war between humans and vampires.
V Wars earned middling reviews from critics upon release, holding a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics were on board with its campy tone, while others felt the series could have gone a little further with its storytelling. As an end-of-year release, V Wars failed to scare up a solid viewership, which is really no fault to anyone but Netflix. Maybe with a summer or fall release, the series wouldn’t have been canceled after one season.
