In theory, a comedy series completely centered around the holiday season is a brilliant concept. Holiday episodes of sitcoms are often the strongest of the season and the most beloved due to their rewatch value. Netflix’s original series Merry Happy Whatever attempted to execute that concept to mixed results. It might have been canned after one Christmas-themed season, but the series could still be an annual tradition on your watch list.
Merry Happy Whatever follows the holiday traditions of the Quinn family, led by the well-meaning but gruff patriarch Don (Dennis Quaid). The single father is hard to please, especially as his youngest daughter Emmy (Bridgit Mendler) brings home her struggling musician boyfriend Matt (Brent Morin) home to get Don’s permission to take their relationship to the next level.
Upon release during Thanksgiving weekend in 2019, Merry Happy Whatever failed to drum up the kind of widespread interest that would keep it around for holiday seasons to come. The series, while an uneven exploration of chaotic family festivities, was charming and full of potential. Featuring standout performances from Ashley Tisdale and Elizabeth Ho, it’s not too late to revisit the single-season sitcom Merry Happy Whatever on Netflix.
