OKUMA, JAPAN - FEBRUARY 23: Shinichi Koga of Kajima Corporation poses for a portrait on February 23, 2016 in Okuma, Japan. Koga works on the project to build the ice wall that blocks the groundwater flow from the ocean side into the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Koga says that the difficult part of his jobs is the environment where he has to wear these protective gears, and there are many restrictions and his tasks require him to ask for permissions from the regulation authorities to proceed. March 11, 2016 marks the fifth anniversary of the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami which claimed the lives of 15,894, and the subsequent damage to the reactors at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant causing the nuclear disaster which still forces 99,750 people to live as evacuees away from the contaminated areas. Netflix is looking to make its own version of the acclaimed HBO series Chernobyl, this time focused on the Fukushima disaster that occurred on March 11, 2011, at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Fukushima, Japan. The disaster is at the center of the upcoming series The Days, premiering this June.

The Fukushima nuclear disaster is considered the worst nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl incident in 1986. To date, these are the only two incidences to rank at level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES), which is the highest level.

For comparison, the Three Mile Island accident was only a level 5 on the INES. While Netflix did make a documentary on the Pennsylvania incident, titled Meltdown: Three Mile Island, The Days will be the first scripted drama on the streamer about a nuclear disaster.

It’ll be interesting to see how The Days compares to HBO’s award-winning miniseries Chernobyl. Announced in 2022, Netflix recently released the official trailer and release date for the upcoming Japanese drama. Keep reading to find out everything we know about the show and to find out exactly when you can start watching it!
