One of the best teen shows streaming on Netflix would have to be Heartbreak High, and we’re happy to know that new episodes will be coming soon in a second season. Heartbreak High season 2 is coming to Netflix this April! We shared the official release date and everything else we know about the second season below.

Heartbreak High is an Australian Netflix original created by Hannah Carroll Chapman. It’s a reboot of the popular 1994 series of the same name and follows a new generation of students attending Hartley High as they navigate love, sex, and heartbreak.

When a map detailing all of the sexual escapades at the school is discovered by staff, the map’s creator Amerie becomes an instant social pariah after taking the blame while not revealing her best friend/co-creator Harper’s involvement. Now, most of the students at the school strongly dislike Amerie because they’re required to take a Sexual Literacy Tutorial. Although being disliked by her peers bothers Amerie, she’s more shocked that Harper wants nothing to do with her anymore and has changed her entire look.

Ayesha Madon plays the role of the protagonist, Amerie. The rest of the cast includes James Majoos, Chloe Hayden, Asher Yasbincek, Thomas Weatherall, Josh Heuston, Will McDonald, Gemma Chua-Tran, and many others.

  • The second season is scheduled to land on Netflix in April 2024.

Renewal

A month after the first season’s release, Netflix announced that Heartbreak High would be returning for a second season. According to the streaming giant, the first season spent three weeks in the global top 10 TV shows on Netflix, accumulating over 42.6M hours viewed in those weeks. The show also received a lot of love on TikTok with #heartbreakhigh garnering over 300m views. With these impressive feats, renewing the series was a no-brainer for Netflix.

Is Heartbreak High season 2 filming?

01/30/24 UPDATE: Production wrapped sometime in 2023.

In a Netflix press release from March 2023, the streaming giant stated that the cameras would start rolling on May 29, 2023, and run through to Aug. 29, 2023. After filming wraps up, the new episodes should immediately enter post-production where they’re expected to spend about six to seven months before landing on Netflix.

Production on Heartbreak High season 2 has officially started! Since the series is Australian, it doesn’t appear to be affected by the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Netflix shared an update noting that season 2 is now underway on May 30, 2023, so it looks like everything is on schedule.

TVTonight shared a video of the cast at a table read for the second season. Check it out below.

Heartbreak High season 1 ending explained

The first season ends with Amerie and Harper reconciling and becoming friends again after they finally have a heart-to-heart conversation about what caused a rift in their friendship in the first place. Harper shares what happened to her the night of the music festival including the attempted sexual assault by Chook and his friends and her having to protect herself from her mentally ill father. The reason why Harper distanced herself from Amerie is because she felt like Amerie wasn’t there for her when she needed her the most. So she decided to redirect her anger toward her. Amerie apologizes and then they’re back on good terms.

With nowhere to go since her father’s in the hospital and because she wants nothing to do with him at the moment, Harper stays over at Amerie’s for the time being. Amerie doesn’t want Harper to live with her dad anymore so she asks her mom for help. Amerie’s mom tells her that they’ll figure something out.

After a failed attempt of trying to get eshays prosecuted for attempted sexual assault, Amerie and Harper don’t know what to do. Since Ca$h feels guilty for being there when Harper was almost sexually assaulted, he decides to find a way to take down Chook and the others who were involved. He finds an incriminating video of the night of the assault and sends it to Harper. Now that Harper has hard evidence, she’s able to take down some of her assaulters except Chook because he wasn’t pictured in the footage.

Sadly, Ca$h is also detained because he was shown in the video but he gets to confess his love to Darren before being taken away by police. After a successful protest by the students, Ms. Obah is able to come back and teach the Sexual Literacy Tutorial at Hartley High.

The last scene of the season finale ends with Harper and Amerie smashing up Chook’s car and setting it on fire before fleeing the scene.

What could Heartbreak High season 2 be about?

There’s a lot to be explored in the second season. For example, Chook saw Harper and Amerie torch his car, so I’m sure he’s not going to let them get away with it. They’ll most likely have to deal with him trying to get revenge. Amerie and Harper might also try to figure out a way to get Chook arrested since he didn’t go down for the attempted sexual assault like the others.

Harper’s dad will eventually be discharged from the hospital, but I doubt Harper live with him after everything that happened. But she can’t stay with Amerie forever either. So, where will she live? What about Ca$h? Will he serve time in prison and if so for how long? What does this mean for his and Darren’s relationship? It seems that Malakai and Amerie still have feelings for each other, so it’ll be interesting to see if they get back together. Malakai begins questioning his sexuality in the first season. Maybe the second season could touch on this more.

Are Harper and Dusty really over? Could Harper have a new love interest in the second season? What about Quinni? She and Sasha do not end up together in the first season. Maybe they’ll resolve their issues in the second season and get back together or maybe Quinni will find someone new.

Here’s the logline for season 2 via Netflix:

"The flies are buzzing, the ibis are raiding the bins, and the sun shines down on our favourite “lowest ranking school in the district” — Hartley High. Students stream through the gates and all our heroes are back for a second term — threesomes, chlamydia and burning cars a distant memory — it seems possible that everyone’s done a bit of growing up over the Term 1 holidays…"

Here's another logline for season 2 via Netflix:

" All our heroes are back for Term Two at the “lowest ranking school in the district.” But fresh hotties, a new sports teacher and a mystery assailant, throw any hopes for a peaceful term into disarray, while the race for school captain is seeing dirty tactics run rife through Hartley High. Yep... It’s Term 2 bitches, and it’s more chaotic than ever. "

We can’t wait to see what happens in Heartbreak High season 2!

Cast

Ayesha Madon and Asher Yasbincek are confirmed to reprise their roles as Amerie and Harper in the second season. James Majoos (Darren) and Chloé Hayden (Quinni) are also confirmed to return as Amerie’s best friends.

Here’s the rest of the confirmed returning cast:

Three new cast members join the Heartbreak High season 2 cast. Netflix provided us with the character descriptions as well.

  • Sam Rechner as Rowan Callaghan - An unassuming country boy with a dry wit and a passion for classic cinema who finds himself thrown headfirst into the chaos of Hartley High and a truly epic love triangle.
  • Kartanya Maynard as Zoe Clark - An opinionated celibacy advocate who, along with her gang of Puriteens, threatens to bring down the SLT class from within.
  • Angus Sampson as Timothy Voss - An uber-masculine sports teacher set to put an end to the bleeding hearts of Hartley High.

How many episodes could there be?

The total episode count for season 2 is unknown as of right now. However, we can probably expect another eight episodes like the first season. There’s a possibility of more or fewer episodes, but our guess is that there will be eight. We’ll share the official episode count once we find out.

Heartbreak High season 2 release date

Get ready because Heartbreak High season 2 is slated to land on Netflix on Thursday, April 11, 2024! You can expect the new episodes to drop at 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET on this date. But of course, these times only apply to people living on the West Coast and East Coast of the United States. If you're in the Central time zone, you can expect the second season to be released at 2:00 a.m. CT on April 11.

Like the first season, the second season is rated TV-MA, meaning it's meant to be watched by mature, adult audiences only. This maturity rating shouldn't be surprising because Netflix rarely changes the maturity rating for a show as it goes on. Overall, we wouldn't recommend watching the new season with younger kids around.

Once the official trailer drops, we'll be sure to return to this space and share it. So, stay tuned to Netflix Life!
