The Chosen One release date, cast, synopsis, and everything we know so far

I don’t know if you know comic book fans, but another one of Mark Millar’s comic book series has been adapted into a TV show and will be coming to Netflix soon. Two of his comics have already been adapted into shows for Netflix, such as Jupiter’s Legacy and Super Crooks. Next up is Millar’s American Jesus comics which will be released under the name The Chosen One (El Elegido in Spanish) as a series on Netflix.

In 2017, Netflix announced that it had acquired the comic book publishing house, Millarworld, founded by Mark Millar. With this acquisition, Netflix would be bringing Millar’s work to life by adapting it into movies, shows, and kid series. A year later, the streaming giant unveiled its first slate of films and shows based on Millar’s comics to be coming to the platform, and American Jesus was one of the upcoming series to be produced.

Finally, Netflix has revealed the official release date for the highly anticipated series and unveiled the key art that fans will absolutely love. Below, we shared everything we know so far about the upcoming fantasy series!

When is The Chosen One series release date?

On May 18, Netflix officially announced that Mark Millar’s new series The Chosen One will be released on Aug. 16. Along with the release date announcement, the streamer also released the stunning poster for the series, which you just have to see to believe. What is The Chosen One about?

The story follows a young boy who after surviving a freak accident, finds out he’s been reincarnated as Jesus Christ. Now faced with a new destiny and people out to get him, the young boy’s mother hides him out in a small rural community.

Here’s the show’s plot provided by Netflix:

"American Jesus follows a twelve-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he’s returned as Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! How will he deal with the destiny to lead the world in a conflict thousands of years in the making?"

Netflix also provided us with the synopsis:

"Jodie, a twelve-year-old boy in Baja California, suddenly discovers he has Jesus-like powers: he can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! As the Evangelical and the Yaquí leaders in town try to get him to use his powers to save mankind, all Jodie wants to do is impress the girl he likes and stand up to his bullies. As Jodie struggles and eventually comes to terms with his destiny, everything gets thrown for a loop when he realizes he discovers the truth around his identity."

Everardo Gout and Leopoldo Gout are co-showrunners and executive producers of the series. Additionally, Everardo serves as director.

What volume of the American Jesus comics is The Chosen One adapting?

The first season is believed to be adapting the first volume of the American Jesus comics, called Chosen. The comic was written by Mark Millar, while Peter Gross did the illustrations.

What language is The Chosen One in?

The fantasy series is a multilingual show using the English and Spanish languages.

Who’s in The Chosen One cast?

Only two actors have been confirmed to be in the cast so far: Black Panther‘s Tenoch Huerta and Glee’s Dianna Argon. However, their character names and descriptions haven’t been revealed.

During Netflix’s TUDUM in September 2022, a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming fantasy series was released featuring some of the cast, including Huerta and Argon. Check it out below.

The young actor who plays the protagonist Jodie is included in the video above, but his name is not revealed. It looks like some of the actors who play Jodie’s friends are also included in the video, but their names aren’t revealed either.

What’s on Netflix provided us with character descriptions for Jodie and his mother, Sarah.

• Jodie is “a seemingly normal teenager until a freak accident makes him think otherwise. He is not pathologically shy but introverted. He is also a great storyteller, a trait he uses to entertain his friends.”
• Sarah is “a beautiful and brave woman. She is Jodie’s mother and protects him a lot, although she doesn’t know what she is protecting him from.”

Could Dianna Argon be playing Jodie’s mother? Hopefully, who Argon and Huerta play in the series will be revealed soon.

When and where was The Chosen One filmed?

Principal photography began in Mexico on April 25, 2022, and wrapped sometime in late 2022.

Sadly, two actors (Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar) who were working on the series were killed in a car crash in June 2022 while filming was still underway. Six other cast or crew members were also injured in the wreck that happened in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. However, the accident did not occur on the set. Production was temporarily paused but eventually resumed.
