Riley Sager is known for writing psychological thriller novels with female protagonists, and now one of his books is potentially being adapted into a Netflix movie! Several of Sager’s novels have been picked up for adaptations, but none have come to fruition yet, so let’s hope this one will be different. The House Across the Lake is the author’s sixth book, published in 2022. Deadline recently reported that Netflix had acquired the rights and is looking to Paul Feig to direct.

Before The House Across the Lake, three other Sager books were working on getting adapted. Universal planned a Final Girls film in 2017, Paramount Television planned a television series based on Lock Every Door in 2019, and Sony Pictures won an auction for Home Before Dark in 2020. Unfortunately, all of these productions seem to have stalled, with the pandemic reportedly impacting their development.

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, Deadline reports that Paul Feig is being eyed to direct the project. Netflix has closed a deal to develop the film, which will be produced by Berlanti-Schechter Films and Feigco.

Paul Feig eying a Netflix adaptation of Riley Sager’s The House Across the Lake

Feig would be a great choice to direct the bestselling thriller novel. Not only has he previously worked with Netflix (on The School for Good and Evil), but he’s directed other book-to-screen thrillers like A Simple Favor. I thought the film version of A Simple Favor was much better than the novel, so The House Across the Lake would be in capable hands.

For those unfamiliar with the novel, The House Across the Lake follows actress Casey Fletcher. After her husband dies and she gets caught up in a string of bad press, Casey retreats to her family’s Vermont lake house to try and get some peace and quiet.

To pass the time, she starts using binoculars and notices a couple living in the house across the lake. One day, the wife vanishes, and Casey gets caught up in a dark obsession as she desperately tries to find out what’s happening to her neighbors.
