Does Alina die in Shadow and Bone season 2? (Spoilers)

Shadow and Bone season 2 brought us to the end of the Grishaverse trilogy. What happened to Alina? Did she die in the season finale?

What a great run of eight episodes. Rather than only telling us the (admittedly rather slow) story from Siege and Storm, the second season covered most of Ruin and Rising. The third book brings an end to The Fold and a few other characters, but would it bring an end to Alina in the series?

It’s time to break down all the events to see what is next for the Sun Summoner. That is if she still is the Sun Summoner.

What happened to Alina in Shadow and Bone season 2?

Alina got some bad news during the season. It turned out that Mal was the Firebird, the third amplifier. If she wanted to take down The Darkling, she would need to kill him and absor his power. Of course, Tamar and David found a way to prevent that from happening, but The Darkling wasn’t going to let Alina’s plan go without a hitch.

Alina was forced to use The Cut, which killed Mal accidentally. She did end up using this to absorb Mal’s power to then be able to take down The Darkling.

Alina didn’t die. In fact, by the end of Shadow and Bone season 2, she has found a new way to serve Ravka, and it’s going to be by Nikolai’s side. This is very different to the books, which saw Alina lose all her powers and get a happy life with Mal.

Instead, it looks like Alina may have absorbed some of The Darkling’s powers. She used merzost to bring Mal back, and we may see that she’s a Shadow Summoner instead of the Sun Summoner should a third season happen.
