Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is Rian Johnson’s critically-acclaimed and star-studded follow-up to the 2019 break-out hit Knives Out. Released on Netflix in December 2022, it didn’t take long for Glass Onion to garner significant buzz and hit the awards circuit. While not as nominated as some of the other big movies released in 2022, Glass Onion still considerably well with audiences and critics alike.

The movie went on to receive several awards and nominations, including two Golden Globe noms, six Critics’ Choice noms, and more. Johnson also received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 95th Academy Awards and the movie was named one of the top ten best movies of 2022 by the National Board of Review.

Given that the Glass Onion cast included many A-list actors, such as Daniel Craig, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Edward Norton, and Janelle Monáe, it’s a little surprising that the movie didn’t manage to earn any acting nominations at the Oscars, but to be fair, neither did Knives Out.

The 2019 movie also received a single Academy Award nom in the Best Original Screenplay category but lost to Parasite that year. At the 95th ceremony, Johnson will be competing against the writers of Women Talking, Top Gun: Maverick, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Living.

Did Rian Johnson win the Oscar for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery?

Unfortunately, Glass Onion did not win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Rian Johnson was against stiff competition in the category and he ultimately lost to Sarah Polley, who wrote the adapted screenplay for Women Talking.

While the movie was great, I always appreciate women writers getting credit, so I’m not too bummed that Johnson lost this year. Better luck for Knives Out 3, maybe the next movie will get some acting noms.

What did you think about the winner of the Best Adapted Screenplay at this year’s Academy Awards? Do you think Glass Onion should have won over Women Talking?
