The Whale was directed by Darren Aronofsky from a screenplay written by Samuel D. Hunter. In fact, it’s based on the 2012 stage play of the same name by Hunter. You might recognize Aronofsky from his previous work on the movies The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, and Mother!. In addition, Hunter is best known for producing and writing for the comedy-drama series Baskets starring Zach Galifianakis.

The drama movie is about an overweight and introverted English teacher named Charlie, who tries to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter for one last chance at redemption. Charlie distanced himself and abandoned his family after he decided to pursue a relationship with a man. Now, he’s reached a severe level of depression and has essentially decided to eat himself to death. But it’s his want to reconnect with his daughter that keeps him going.

Besides Fraser, the gifted cast is made up of Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton.

Is The Whale on Netflix?

Unfortunately, you will not find this movie on Netflix. There’s a chance that Netflix might acquire streaming rights in the future, but that’s not the case at the moment. Don’t worry, though. Netflix has a great selection of drama films on its platform for you to watch, such as The Woman in the Window, The Discovery, Girl, Interrupted, Luckiest Girl Alive, and Nocturnal Animals.
