Outlast officially renewed for a second season (here’s everything we know so far!)

Netflix’s American survival competition series Outlast is returning with new episodes. Outlast season 2 was officially confirmed on May 15, 2023, and the first season performed exceptionally well for the streaming service, debuting at #6 on Netflix’s weekly Global Top 10 TV (English) list and reaching the Top 10 in 27 countries.

Sixteen “lone wolf” types are dropped off in the Alaskan wilderness as they compete to win $1 million. The only rule in the game is that they must be part of a team to win. Easier said than done when your whole personality is built around being extremely independent.

In the first season, Outlast quickly garnered significant attention when viewers saw how several team members were willing to play dirty with their competitors, sabotaging them by stealing supplies and sleeping bags, thus forcing some people to sleep in below-freezing temperatures with limited resources.

At least one contestant, Jill Ashok, might just go down in history as one of the biggest reality television villains ever, at least on Netflix. It’ll be interesting to see how Outlast season 2 ups the stakes.

When will Outlast season 2 be released on Netflix?

The first season of Outlast premiered on March 10, 2023, so it’s unlikely we’ll see another season until the end of 2023 or 2024 at the earliest. Netflix has not indicated when the show will return, but since it is a reality competition, it shouldn’t take very long to film, and it likely won’t be affected by the ongoing writer’s strike.

The first season was filmed in Alaska in the fall of 2021. That means it took almost two years for the show to come to our television screens, but now that it has aired and Netflix renewed it, there should be a quicker turnaround time between season 1 and season 2.

Where will Outlast season 2 be filmed?

Season 1 took place in the Alaskan wilderness, but there is no reason that season 2 must also take place there. Maybe next time, competitors will have to survive somewhere extremely hot rather than icy cold. But for now, we can assume they will return to the same area for season 1, though I think it might be more compelling if they go somewhere different.
