Netflix’s hit thriller series You has finally returned, and not only are we meeting a whole new batch of characters this time around, but we’re also in a new location! As you might remember, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) faked his own death after murdering his wife Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) in the season 3 finale. In the final moments of the season, we saw Joe jetting off to Paris, France to find the new object of his affection, Marienne (Tati Gabrielle).

Joe’s now living in London, England by the start of You season 4, posing as a professor. Though he’s ready to start over and begin a new life with a new identity, it’s difficult for him to shake his old habits. Especially when there’s a murderer on the loose that isn’t him.

You season 4 part 1 was released on Netflix on Thursday, Feb. 9, and part 2 has just been added on Thursday, March 10. We’re breaking down every episode below in case you missed something!

You season 4 episode 1 recap: “Joe Takes a Holiday”

The first episode of the season opens with a college student walking to her class. Once she arrives in the classroom, we find out that Joe is the professor. While Joe teaches the course, he calls out the student by her name, Nadia. Once the class ends, Nadia stays after to talk to Joe, who now goes by the name of Jonathan Moore (I’m going to keep referring to him as Joe, though). Their conversation ends with Nadia giving Joe a book for him to read. The book is by an author named Rhys Montrose. Nadia explains to Joe that everyone in England wants Rhys to run for mayor, but she disagrees with him running.

As Joe walks around the university, his voiceover plays in the background. We find out he still misses Marienne, but he’s trying to lay low and stay out of trouble in London. Then, a person approaches him, who Joe describes as a “douchebag.” Joe greets the person by calling him Professor Harding, but the guy insists that Joe call him by his first name, which is Malcolm. Through their brief conversation, we learn that Joe met Malcolm after his job interview, and Malcolm’s been trying to get Joe to go out for drinks ever since. Malcolm also helped Joe get his flat.

Later, we see Joe at his flat, watching his neighbors through a window. Joe’s neighbors are Malcolm and his girlfriend. He watches them for a little bit before he realizes that he’s slipping into his old ways. So, Joe immediately stops people-watching. However, the next day comes along, and Joe goes back to watching his neighbors while also searching up everything he can about them. Joe finds out that Malcolm comes from money, and his girlfriend Kate Galvin is an art gallery director. Later that night, Joe catches Kate pleasuring herself from his window, but he tries to ignore it.

However, it makes him think about Marienne, so he takes out a locket that is most likely hers and messes with it. Then, there’s a cut to a flashback of Joe in Paris searching for Marienne. After a long time passes, Joe finally finds a painting of Marienne’s on display outside. He asks an artist nearby how he can contact Marienne, and the artist tells him that she’s currently in London for an art fair. So, Joe leaves Paris for London because he had hoped to find Marienne there.

Then, we cut back to the present time. Joe leaves his office and sees Kate being robbed outside the university. He helps her out, but Kate doesn’t seem appreciative. She starts calling the police, and Joe asks her not to tell them that he was there to help. Remember, Joe is believed to be dead, so if the cops get involved, they’ll know something fishy is going on. Kate drives Joe home, but he still doesn’t know if she mentioned his name to the police. So, he vows to stay away from Kate and Malcolm. But Joe’s plan goes out the window when Malcolm shows up at his door to thank him for helping Kate and to invite him out for drinks at his friend’s club called the Sundry House.

At Sundry House, Joe meets all of Kate and Malcolm’s wealthy friend group, which includes Adam, Phoebe, Rhys, Sophie, Simon, Roald, Gemma, Blessing, and Connie. However, Joe had already researched the friend group before coming to the club. Through Joe’s voiceover, we learn about each person. While Joe waits for Malcolm to take him home, he meets Rhys in person. If you recall, Rhys was the author of the book Nadia gave him. They bond over their horrible childhoods and shared views on the “rich” before Rhys tells Joe he has to go because he has a flight to catch.

With no one to talk to and Malcolm taking forever to find him, Joe decides it’s time for him to leave and go home. But he’s stopped by Phoebe, who forces him to drink absinthe, a highly alcoholic drink that can make people severely intoxicated. Then, there’s a cut to a flashback of when Joe first arrived in London. He attends the art fair where Marienne is said to be and finds her. They make eye contact, and then Marienne starts running away from him. The flashback then ends.

After taking more shots of absinthe, Joe eventually knocks out and wakes up in his flat. He realizes that Malcolm helped him get there. As he gets ready in the morning, Joe notices Malcolm’s dead body laid out on his table with a knife sticking out of his chest. He immediately thinks he killed Malcolm because he was talking badly about Marienne the night before. As Joe cleans up the crime scene and gets ready to dispose of the body, he notices that one of Malcolm’s fingers is cut off. But he couldn’t figure out why he would do such a thing. He takes Malcolm’s body to a warehouse, cuts it into pieces, places them in bags, and dumps them in sewage pipes and the River Thames.

Then, there’s a cut back to the flashback of Joe chasing after Marienne through the London streets. Joe eventually catches up to her, and they have an intense conversation. The conversation ends with Joe telling Marienne that he’ll prove to her he’s not a murderer anymore, and then he lets her go.

As Joe walks out the door, a mysterious man watches him from afar. The man even tracks him to a restaurant. While Joe drowns his sorrows by drinking alcohol, the mysterious man approaches him and introduces himself as Elliot Tannenberg. He works for Ray Quinn, who is Love Quinn’s father. He tells Joe he was sent to kill him, but he’s tired of hurting people.

Elliot then offers Joe a deal. The deal would give Joe a chance at a new life in London with a new identity, but only if he gives Elliot all the money he stole from Love’s account. Joe accepts the deal but hesitates after Elliot tells him that before he can start his new life, he needs to kill Marienne. In the end, Joe decides to spare Marienne’s life, but he makes sure to steal her necklace to show Elliot that he completed the job even though he didn’t.

Back in the present time, Joe talks to Kate outside the university. She invites him to dinner with her friends because Phoebe asked her to. Kate also tells Joe that she didn’t tell the police about him helping her the other night.

Later that night, Joe arrives at Sundry House for dinner with Kate’s friends. As he’s about to walk through the door, he receives random texts through an app called “Evanesce” from an unknown person. The texts basically lets Joe know that someone is watching him and knows what he did with Malcolm’s body. Joe instantly thinks it’s someone in the friend group whose behind the texts, so he makes it his mission to find out which person it is.

You season 4 episode 2 recap: “Portrait of the Artist”

The second episode picks up where the first episode left off. Joe sits at the dinner table at Sundry House, eyeing the friend group as he tries to figure out who the anonymous texter is. He believes that one of them killed Malcolm and is trying to frame him for it. After the dinner is over, Joe races home to find an invitation to Simon’s art show on the floor. He looks up where the art gallery is located and finds out that Kate works there. Then, Joe starts to believe that Kate may be behind the creepy texts, so he starts watching her closely.

Later, Joe begins to receive messages from the anonymous texter again. The anonymous texter lets Joe know they’ve been watching him and is learning more about who he really is. Joe then goes over to Phoebe and Adam’s flat. He meets Adam’s bodyguard, Vic, and finds out Phoebe is the one who sent him the invitation to Simon’s art show. Since Joe has nothing appropriate to wear to the art show, Phoebe and Adam ask Vic to bring Joe to the art gallery to find him a nice tux.

After Joe finds something to wear, he goes to the university and tries to find a way to get into Malcolm’s office. First, he searches through Kate’s purse and finds Malcolm’s office key. Next, he searches all over Malcolm’s office for any information on him and finds a stack of money and a pocketbook filled with weird names and numbers. Joe then realizes that Malcolm had a gambling problem. He takes the money and pocketbook and leaves Malcolm’s office.

Later, Joe follows different members of the friend group, trying to figure out who is more capable of murder, but can’t seem to pin anyone down. While following Adam, Joe discovers he has a pee fetish and realizes Malcolm knew about it. But then Joe is caught by Vic and questioned. Joe comes up with a lie to get Vic to let him go and it works. Joe now believes that Malcolm was blackmailing Adam to cover his gambling debts. This leads Joe also to believe that Adam killed Malcolm to stop the blackmail and is the anonymous texter.

Joe makes his way back to the art gallery and meets a young lady at the back door. He asks for entry, and she allows him in. In the art gallery, Joe speaks with Adam. But once their conversation ends, Joe is left wondering if Adam really did kill Malcolm.

Later, Joe talks to Rhys and finds out why he’s still friends with the friend group, even though they aren’t necessarily good people. Rhys tells Joe they were there for him when he needed them the most and that’s what counts. However, Rhys also mentions something about Roald that makes Joe believe he might be the killer. As Joe and Rhys continue to talk, the young woman who helped Joe get into the art gallery walks by yelling for Simon. Everyone gathers around the young woman as she throws red paint on Simon’s artwork. She starts calling Simon out for being a “fake” before she’s pulled away by Vic and thrown out of the gallery.

Then, Joe overhears Simon telling Kate to find the young woman or he’ll stop working with her. He walks over to Kate and tells her he knows where she can find the young woman, and they leave the art gallery together. They find the young girl in a rough part of town and question her about why she threw the paint on Simon’s artwork. The young woman explains to them that she was Simon’s assistant and is the person who actually painted the canvases, not Simon. She even reveals the inspiration behind one of the paintings was her cat, Isis. Joe suddenly remembers one of the weird names in Malcolm’s pocketbook was Isis, and realizes that he was talking about the young woman.

After Kate leaves, the young woman tells Joe that Malcolm told her he would expose Simon, but then he disappeared. Joe now believes Malcolm was blackmailing Simon, so Simon killed him for it. Joe thanks the young woman for the information and runs outside to talk to Kate. He tries to warn her about Simon, but she doesn’t listen and drives away.

Joe makes his way back to the art gallery and waits outside for Simon so he can follow him. Meanwhile, Simon takes drugs in an office in the art gallery. Then, the killer walks into the office and murders Simon while Joe is asleep on a bench outside. Joe wakes up once he hears sirens and sees two police cars. He also receives two text messages from the anonymous texter that basically lets him know that something bad just happened to Simon. Joe runs into the office and sees Simon’s dead body on a chair with a knife in his chest and his ear cut off. Joe now knows that Simon couldn’t have been the killer and anonymous texter.

Later, Joe goes to Phoebe and Adam’s flat to talk about what happened to Simon with the rest of the friend group. But no one from the circle of friends seems to really care besides Rhys. Joe eventually leaves Phoebe and Adam’s flat and sees Kate talking on the phone. He listens to her conversation and finds out that she’s secretly paying for the young artist’s rebab.

Then, we cut to Joe speaking to Nadia in the university library. Nadia talks about the relationship she had with Malcolm, which makes Joe question if she was just a student or something more. The conversation ends with Joe agreeing to read Nadia’s work later.

After leaving the university, Joe makes his way home. But when he walks through the door, he sees tons of news articles plastered on the wall of all the people he killed in the past. Then, the anonymous texter starts sending Joe messages, letting him know that they now know his real identity. Joe looks up from his phone in disbelief, and then it cuts to the credits.

You season 2 episode 3 recap: “Eat the Rich”

The third episode begins with Joe frantically taking down all the news articles off his wall while receiving multiple text messages from the anonymous texter. To make sure his stalker can’t enter his flat again, he changes the locks on his door. He also decides he will start ignoring his stalker’s text messages.

Later at the university, Joe teaches a lesson but is interrupted by a student to inform him that news just broke about Malcolm being murdered. Based on the article, people believe Malcolm’s murder is connected to the murder of Simon. The killer even has a name now, “the eat-the-rich killer.” Malcolm’s finger was sent to the police by the killer with a note saying, “This is not a kidnapping. This is a murder.” Joe then realizes that his stalker/anonymous texter kept Malcolm’s finger so that he could force him to continue playing his sick game. He knows he can’t ignore his stalker anymore now.

Back at Joe’s flat, Joe looks out his window and sees Kate speaking with the police in her flat. Kate notices Joe staring at her from his window, so she calls him. Joe tells her he wants to offer his condolences about Malcolm, but Kate tells him it’s not necessary because the police are on their way to his flat.

The police question Joe about when was the last time he saw Malcolm, and after Joe answers them, they mention that Joe was the last person to see Malcolm alive. Joe quickly comes up with a lie to get the police off his back and it seems to work. Once the police leave, Joe receives a text from his stalker saying that Kate is a threat and that Joe should kill her.

Joe doesn’t want to kill Kate, but he thinks his stalker will, so he keeps his eye on Kate to ensure she doesn’t become the next victim. Joe also realizes that if his stalker’s next target is Kate, he’ll finally be able to track them down by constantly following her. Later, Joe discovers Nadia was having a secret affair with Malcolm.

At Simon’s funeral, Joe watches the circle of friends trying to figure out who in the friend group is the killer and his stalker. Once the funeral is over, Joe and the friend group go to Sundry House. Joe is approached by Vic, who lets him know that he’s suspicious of him and will figure out what his real intentions are for hanging out around Phoebe and Adam’s friend group. He then receives a text from his stalker asking why he hasn’t killed Kate yet. Joe looks around and notices Kate is missing, so he goes outside to find her. He finds her, but they don’t talk long and Kate leaves.

Joe follows Kate all the way to a pub. He tells her he doesn’t think it’s good for her to be alone since a killer is targeting her and her friends. Joe even hints at someone in Kate’s friend group being the killer, but Kate doesn’t believe any of her friends are capable of murder. Eventually, Kate opens up to Joe and even asks him to follow her to a secret spot. The secret spot is a hidden garden where Kate and Malcolm used to drink and hook up. Kate comes on to Joe and propositions him for sex. Initially, Joe tries to reject Kate’s advances, but he ends up giving in to his sexual urges. Meanwhile, Vic secretly watches Joe and Kate hook up from afar.

Joe wakes up at Kate’s flat on her couch. While walking around the flat, he finds Kate sleeping in her bed. So, he decides to snoop around Malcolm’s office to find a love letter that Nadia had written to Malcolm. But once he finds the letter, Kate catches him in the act. Fortunately, Joe is able to keep the letter, but Kate kicks him out of her flat.

While standing outside Kate’s flat, Joe receives multiple text messages from his stalker. The stalker taunts Joe and tells him that they think he likes how it feels to kill. Joe denies it, so his stalker tells him they’ll show him that he does. Initially, Joe is confused by what his stalker means by this, but once he sees Kate get in her car, he figures it out and follows her.

Joe follows Kate to a crypt, where she talks to a box containing Malcolm’s finger. Once Kate leaves, Joe comes out of hiding but is caught by Vic. Vic confronts Joe about why he’s following Kate and then finds Malcolm’s ring in his pocket. Joe realizes his stalker put the ring in his pocket to frame him. Vic and Joe then start tussling on the floor. The fight ends with Joe strangling Vic with his own tie, ultimately killing him. Then, he takes Vic’s dead body to Simon’s gravesite and buries him with his casket.

Joe arrives back at his flat and starts receiving text messages from his stalker. While texting his stalker, Joe realizes the reason his stalker is bothering him is that he’s lonely and wants a friend. Joe then decides he will pretend to be his stalker’s friend so that he can eventually meet him in person.

The following day, Joe receives a text from Phoebe asking him to meet her at Sundry House. But before he leaves his flat, he gets a visit from Nadia. He returns her letter, and then Nadia leaves. As he’s about to leave his flat, Joe receives a text from his stalker. His stalker tells him it’s time for them to finally meet and that they’ll provide details on when and where soon. Joe then makes his way to Sundry House.

As Joe walks through the door, he sees the entire friend group standing by the bar. Then, the police walk up to Joe, asking to speak with him. What could they want?

You season 2 episode 4 recap: “Hampsie”

Coming off that cliffhanger at the end of episode 3, all eyes are on Joe at the start of episode 4. But no need to fear; the detectives show up at Sundry House just to follow up on the lead Joe gave them. That’s right, he’s not in trouble. On the contrary, the detectives believe he might’ve helped them solve Simon’s murder. They tell him that they looked into the tip from the artist Blue, and just like that, Joe’s off the hook again.

The fourth episode is titled “Hampsie” because that’s the new location Joe goes to. Phoebe invites him to her country house, and though he’s hesitant to agree at first, once he finds out the whole group is going he can’t resist. Joe wants nothing more than to find out who’s been texting him and who the Eat the Rich killer is. Will he find them in episode 4?

When Joe arrives at Hampsie, it’s unsurprisingly a huge, extravagant mansion that resembles a castle. Some of the wealthy guests give Joe a hard time right off the bat, with Gemma asking him if he’s having sex with Phoebe and Roald giving him back-handed compliments. Joe feels super uncomfortable and says to himself that the killer could be any of the friend group members. They’re all “monsters.”

Kate and Joe have adjoining rooms which won’t help their decision to keep things platonic, while Joe finds out he has another admirer. When someone slips a note under his door with the words “portrait gallery,” he quickly sneaks away in hopes it’s the killer. But he’s in for a huge surprise when it turns out to be Phoebe, who tries to seduce him. Joe turns her down and then realizes she’s not feeling prioritized by Adam, which is why she tried to have sex with him.

As Joe tours around the mansion, he realizes Gemma is one of the worst of the friend group as he watches her harass and embarrass the staff. “Everything in me says let them die,” his voiceover can be heard narrating.

Adam then approaches Joe and asks him to grab a drink, and for a split second, he wonders if Adam could be the killer. But he quickly realizes that’s not the case when Adam starts asking him for marriage advice. He says he wants to propose to Phoebe but isn’t ready to give up his freedom or his secrets. The conversation isn’t all useless to Joe, however, as Adam also reveals that it was Roald’s idea to invite Joe on the trip. Hmm.

Back in their rooms, Joe and Kate almost get intimate but stop themselves before it gets too hot and heavy, just before Roald knocks on the door and asks Kate to hang out. Joe asks Kate about Roald, getting super suspicious when she suggests he has wanted to be more than friends. Is Roald in love with Kate? And does that mean he’s the killer? According to Joe, he’d have the motive to kill Malcolm and Simon.

Acting upon this theory, Joe sneaks into Roald’s room and then researches him online, seeing his rich parents and family and discovering he’s a landscape photographer. Joe finds Roald’s camera and starts looking through the photos, finding some extremely creepy ones of Kate. Some show her getting dressed or undressed, while others are upskirt shots. Gross.

The next morning Joe and Kate sit next to each other at breakfast and Gemma is still being insufferable, spanking the waiter and just being overall rude again. Kate tells Joe that she despises Gemma and you can tell there’s real feeling in her voice.

In a surprise move, Roald asks Joe to go hunting and of course, Joe can’t pass up the opportunity. Joe thinks this could really be the guy and hopefully, he’ll confirm that soon. The two of them are out in the woods alone and Roald starts asking Joe about his relationship with Kate, clearly very jealous. He’s extremely protective of Kate which makes Joe all the more suspicious. In one shot, Roald is standing behind Joe and has his gun pointed right at him, but Kate appears and shoots a bird down, distracting Roald. Kate and Roald walk off, leaving Joe behind.

In their private talk, Kate accuses Roald of finding someone new to bully, and Roald says she needs to find an equal like him. She rejects this idea and says she’s not like him, storming off.

When Joe and Kate see each other again they’re in their rooms and they decide to throw caution to the wind and have sex. There’s an obvious connection between the two and they choose to act upon it this time. Let’s see what this means for their relationship moving forward.

At dinner that evening, Gemma is up to her usual antics and complains about how Rhys skipped out on the trip before posing the following question: What if Jonathan is the killer? She points out to the table that people only started dying after he showed up, something Kate isn’t happy to hear. Roald then challenges Kate, saying she actually believes she isn’t one of “us.” He then makes the conversation more interesting by asking if Jonathan knows. Knows what, you might ask? That’s the big secret. There’s something Kate’s hiding from Jonathan but fortunately, we don’t have to wait long to find out. But before Roald spills the secret, Phoebe is brought out by the staff, pretending to be dead, and the group is given instructions to start a murder mystery game.

While the group is out trying to find clues, Joe and Kate find each other in the hallway and Kate comes clean. As it turns out, Kate is the daughter of one of the most powerful men in the world, someone named Tom Lockwood. According to her, he’s an activist investor but is completely corrupt and has caused a ton of pain while getting richer and richer. Because of this, she and him are estranged, but now that there have been murders in her friend group, he’s sent security guards to watch after her.

Joe and Kate bond over their troubled pasts and trauma, and while Joe doesn’t get into the details of what he’s been through, of course, he does comfort her by saying he understands feeling cursed by the past. And with that, Joe realizes he’s really starting to fall for her. This can’t be good.

Joe heads to Roald’s room again in hopes of finding more clues, wanting desperately to prove he’s his guy. But before he can get anywhere, Roald appears and accuses Joe of being the killer, pushing Joe out of the window. Though it’s a pretty far fall, Joe lands on a shrub on the ground and is in good shape all things considered. He gets up and starts walking with a limp before hearing a loud scream. Realizing. Kate isn’t anywhere to be found, he runs up to her room and finds a shocking scene.

Gemma is lying dead on the floor with blood everywhere, and Kate’s bent down in front of her holding a bloody knife. Now things have gotten even more complicated.

You season 2 episode 5 recap: “The Fox and the Hound”

The fourth episode ends on an intense note as Joe believes Kate killed Gemma. But as we learn in the opening scene of episode 5, Kate is in the same boat as Joe. She denies killing Gemma and says she’s not a murderer, and Joe agrees to help her cover it up so she’s not framed. Kate doesn’t want to involve the cops or the security guards her father hired, because she feels like her father would “own [her]” over the situation.

Meanwhile, the other characters are having quite the night, with Adam doing excessive amounts of cocaine and Roald on the hunt to find Joe.

Kate suggests they hide Gemma’s body in the game larder and place her into a chest so they can carry her down. But before they’re able to transport the body, Phoebe storms in and starts complaining about her relationship with Adam. Kate and Joe need her out, so Joe quickly tells her that Adam has a sex kink he’s embarrassed about. Kate then tells Phoebe she wants to have sex with Joe so she should leave. Phoebe seems understanding and not suspicious at all, so she goes. Kate and Joe begin to move the chest but Gemma’s body falls right out the bottom. Without a plan B, Joe looks out the window and realizes they can throw Gemma’s body out just like he fell in the episode prior.

They get Gemma’s body to the game larder and then suddenly get into a heated argument, with Kate accusing Joe of being the Eat the Rich killer, saying he hid the body all too easily. Joe then comes clean about Malcolm’s death, explaining that someone’s framing him and sending him the mysterious texts. Opening up further, he tells Kate he was married once and had to leave his son behind, though he doesn’t reveal more than the fact that he has to start over from his past life.

Phoebe goes to confront Adam, telling him she knows he’s hiding a kink from her because Joe informed her. She guesses a few possibilities before correctly naming a golden shower, and she even suggests they try it. But as they get all set up, things quickly become awkward and Adam admits it won’t work with her. He wants the person to be below him, and she gets frustrated, coming to the conclusion that they’re not equals in their relationship. Though they both say they love each other, she breaks up with him.

After Kate and Joe are back up in the house after hiding Gemma’s body, Kate realizes she must’ve lost her bracelet down in the game larder. Her name was engraved on it, so they need to go find it before anyone else does. Joe volunteers to go retrieve it, while Kate goes to her room and sees Phoebe there, looking horrified at the bloody carpet. Kate explains what happened, and Phoebe seems relieved it wasn’t Kate who was killed. Kate urges Phoebe not to tell the others because they couldn’t handle it well, and they decide to send the staff away and tell the security guards that Gemma is missing. We then see that Roald was standing outside of Kate’s door listening to them the whole time.

His breakup with Phoebe sends Adam in a spiral and he tells Roald he’s looking for Joe, angry that he spilled his secret. He also tells Roald that Joe’s having sex with Kate, something that enrages Roald. A staff worker comes in and informs Roald that they know where Joe is, and he goes to the game larder to find him.

Joe is startled to discover Roald behind him with a gun pointed at him, and Roald brings him to the rest of the group to expose him as the Eat the Rich killer. Unfortunately for Roald, however, no one takes him seriously and at first even laughs him off. Roald then reveals that Gemma’s dead, and tries to convince everyone that Joe’s the one responsible. Joe tries to pin the murders on Roald, saying he hated Malcolm. Adam’s belligerent and calls Joe a murderer, to which Joe retaliates by punching him and knocking him out.

Roald then decides to give Joe a head start in his hunt, telling him to start running before he goes after him to kill him. Joe runs out to the woods and eventually gets the upper hand by approaching Roald from the back and attacking him. Meanwhile, Kate and Phoebe show up to the rest of the group and ask what happened. Kate orders security to go help Joe.

After Joe attacks Roald, he’s surprised by Rhys who shows up out of nowhere. Rhys picks up the gun and says “hello, Joe” before knocking him out.

Joe wakes up in a dungeon-like room where he and Roald are chained up, where he finally realizes who the Eat the Rich killer is. It’s Rhys! Rhys is the one who has been sending him the text messages. Joe asks him why, and Rhys explains that he’s done a lot of digging on Joe and felt inspired by his ability to evade punishment for his crimes. He wants to pin all the murders on Roald but tasks Joe with killing him first.

Rhys doesn’t unchain Joe and tells him to simply figure out how to kill Roald. While Joe thinks to himself that Roald deserves to die, he doesn’t want to take orders from Rhys. But before he can do anything at all, he has to break out of the chains.

When Rhys returns, he says his plan A was to frame Joe for Malcolm’s murder, and he’s still considering going with that. If Joe doesn’t kill Roald, that is. As Rhys walks out again, he kicks over a candle stick and starts a fire.

Tired of waiting inside, Kate decides she’s going outside to find Joe. Adam wakes up in Phoebe’s arms and they make up before the group starts smelling smoke outside.

Down in the dungeon, Roald wakes up and Joe is finally able to break free. Surprisingly, Joe decides he’s going to help Roald and breaks his chains as well. They attempt to get out from the ceiling but don’t have much luck until Kate appears and saves them. The group then watches from outside as the mansion goes up in flames.

Back in London, Joe tries to deal with his new reality knowing it was Rhys watching him and committing the murders. Kate knocks on Joe’s door and invites him out for drinks at the pub, but Joe turns her down. Though he might have feelings for her, he doesn’t want her to get any closer to him with Rhys around. He tells her he doesn’t want to hurt her, which is true (just not the whole truth), and she’s left really frustrated.

After she leaves, Joe continues watching the news and learns that Rhys is running for mayor of London. Joe decides he needs to stop Rhys as soon as possible, and that’s where the episode ends. Joe’s on a mission now to take Rhys down, though we’re sure that will be easier said than done.

You season 4 episode 6 recap: “Best of Friends”

The sixth episode opens with Joe lurking in the audience of Rhys’s press conference. Once Rhys finishes answering the public questions, he stares at Joe as he walks past him but doesn’t say anything. In fact, it appears as of Rhys doesn’t even know who Joe is. At this moment, Joe makes it his mission to find irrefutable evidence to stop him. Meanwhile, the photographer whose been watching Joe since previous episodes snaps a photo and stares at him from afar.

Then, there’s a cut to Joe’s apartment and we see Joe searching for where Rhys lives on the internet. However, Joe knows it won’t be easy to break into the apartment because cameras are everywhere. As Joe continues to browse the internet, he overhears a conversation between Kate and Roald outside his door. He walks to his door, looks through the crack, and sees Kate and Roald standing by her apartment. Kate invites Roald to her fundraiser, but Roald declines because he’ll be traveling to St. Barts with his family for a few months. Joe closes his door and then takes his phone out of his pocket to see an invitation from Phoebe to Kate’s charity event at Sundry House.

At Sundry House, Adam tries to sell his expensive cars to a man named Steve because of his financial troubles. Initially, Adam decides not to sell them because Steve wants them for less than their worth. But then Steve makes a deal with Adam that he can’t refuse. Steve will give Adam a costly diamond in exchange for his car collection, but Adam has to also propose to Phoebe. If Phoebe accepts Adam’s proposal, Adam will get to keep the diamond. But if Phoebe rejects Adam’s proposal, Steve will take the diamond back and keep the car collection. They shake on the deal, and then Steve leaves.

Phoebe enters the room and tells Adam she thinks she’s being followed and that someone is watching her. Adam tries to calm Phoebe down but doesn’t really take her seriously. To alleviate Phoebe’s fears, Adam tells Phoebe that she’ll stay with him for now. Later, Joe arrives at his apartment to find Rhys sitting in his living area. Rhys explains his reasoning for killing Malcolm, Simon, and Gemma to Joe. He tells Joe that they would’ve ruined his image and mayoral campaign, so he had to get rid of them. The conversation ends with Rhys blackmailing Joe again. He demands Joe find a person to frame all the murders on or he’ll pin them on him.

Later that night, Joe arrives at Sundry House for Kate’s charity event. The photographer from earlier pretends to be a waitress and watches Joe walk by. Elsewhere in Sundry House, Kate tries to reassure a worried Phoebe that the police will be at the event and watch over them. Joe approaches Kate and Phoebe, and Kate walks away. While conversing, Phoebe gossips about her friends to Joe. Once she talks about Connie, Joe decides that he’ll frame him for Rhys’s murders.

Joe then notices a guy talking to Kate and gets jealous. Phoebe explains that the mystery guy is named Niko and comes from money. Niko flirts with Kate and later buys Simon’s entire art collection to impress her. After some convincing, Kate invites Niko back to her place after the event. Later, Joe decides not to plant Simon’s decomposed ear on Connie because he realizes he’s a good guy. Now he has to find someone else to frame. Elsewhere, the photographer approaches Phoebe and tells her the police asked her to escort her to the safe room.

As Phoebe and the photographer make it to the elevator, Nadia appears and asks Phoebe for a picture together. Phoebe is willing to take the photo, but the photographer tells her they can’t because they need to get to the safe room immediately. As the elevators close, Nadia stares at Phoebe and the photographer and becomes suspicious. She then finds Joe and explains what happened. Joe knows something is wrong and goes to find Phoebe.

In a hotel room, the photographer locks the door and brings Phoebe to a couch to sit down. Phoebe asks the photographer where the police are, and the photographer tells her the police aren’t doing their job to find the killer. She explains that it was her idea to bring Phoebe to the room to protect her. Then, the photographer goes to her bag to get a padlock and put it on the door. Phoebe starts panicking and realizes the photographer is the person who’s been following her. She gets up and walks to the door, but the photographer (Dawn) tells her she’s not going anywhere.

Meanwhile, the police and everyone else downstairs search for Phoebe and Dawn. Phoebe tries to convince Dawn to let her go, but Dawn refuses to do so. Dawn tries to calm Phoebe down, but only makes her more nervous. She asks Phoebe if she remembers the matching tattoos they got together. Phoebe stares at her in confusion because this didn’t actually happen.

Later, Phoebe tries to gain Dawn’s trust and Dawn starts to open up. Dawn explains how she’s been watching Phoebe on television for years and following her social media because she felt a connection between them. At this moment, Phoebe realizes that Dawn is mentally unstable. Dawn then tells Phoebe that Adam is using her for her money. Phoebe doesn’t believe her at first, but she eventually does.

Joe finally arrives at the hotel room and knocks on the door. Dawn refuses to let Joe in at first, but Phoebe convinces her. Once Joe enters the room, he tries to get Dawn to put the knife in her hand down and let Phoebe go. As Dawn speaks, Phoebe grabs her and gets ahold of the knife. The police then barge through the door and grab Dawn. Another police officer goes through Dawn’s bag and finds Simon’s ear. So Joe decided to frame Dawn for all of Rhys’s murders. The police arrest Dawn and take her away. Meanwhile, Nadia stands at the door and stares at Joe in suspicion.

The following day, Adam proposes to Phoebe, but she rejects his proposal because she knows he’s using her for her money. Adam tries to convince Phoebe that he doesn’t want to marry her for her money, but Phoebe doesn’t believe him. She tells him that if he really does love her, he’ll sort out his financial troubles first and then come back to her.

At Kate’s apartment, Kate and Niko make out on her couch until she sees a text pop up on Niko’s phone from her father. Kate realizes Niko works for her father and was sent by him. She then kicks Niko out of her apartment. While drinking a glass of wine, Kate notices Joe staring at her from his apartment. Joe goes to Kate’s apartment, and they come to an understanding before sleeping together.

In the last scene of episode 6, Joe arrives back at his apartment to find Rhys sitting at his table. Rhys explains to Joe that he has one final task for him to do, and then he’ll stop bothering him. Joe is given the task of killing Kate’s father, Tom Lockwood. Then, it cuts to the credits.

You season 4 episode 7 recap: “Good Man, Cruel World”

The seventh episode opens with Joe and Kate going on their first date. As they enjoy each other’s company, Joe can’t help but think about how everything between them will change once Tom Lockwood comes to town the next day. Then, there’s a cut to a flashback of when Joe and Rhys were talking in his apartment about killing Tom. Joe asks Rhys what incriminating information Tom has on him that he wants to kill him. Rhys tells Joe he has nothing to hide, but Joe knows he’s lying, so he decides to get close to Tom to find out how he can take Rhys down.

The flashback ends, and we cut back to Joe and Kate’s date. He takes her to an Indian restaurant he frequents, and they talk about the food and its location. Kate points out that the restaurant is located near an abandoned building, and Joe tells her to take him to a better restaurant then. Their date ends with Joe convincing Kate to let him go to dinner with her father.

The following day at the university, Nadia talks to Edward about her suspicions about Joe. After their conversation, she tries to figure out how to get close to Joe to learn more about him and allay her suspicions. Meanwhile, Joe searches for information about Tom before he meets him later that night for dinner. Based on his research, Joe realizes just how powerful Tom is.

Later at dinner, Tom makes it clear to Joe that he knows who he really is and of his past. Joe tries to appear unbothered and answers all of Tom’s questions. Then, Tom calls a server to bring over a museum model. He explains to Kate that he bought a museum in New York for her as a gift. Overwhelmed by the gift, Kate excuses herself to the restroom. While Kate is gone, Tom starts asking Joe some hard-hitting questions about his ex-wife, Love. He even asks Joe if he’s killed anyone before. Joe answers Tom’s questions the best way he can, and then Tom decides to change the topic to Rhys.

Tom tells Joe to bring him incriminating information on Rhys so that he can take him down and kick him out of the running for mayor. Joe now decides he will team up with Tom and not kill him. This way, he can use him to put Rhys in prison.

Back at Kate’s apartment, Kate tells Phoebe she’ll help put her in a mental hospital since she’s been struggling with her mental health since the stalker situation. Phoebe reluctantly agrees, but then Adam arrives and convinces Phoebe not to go by manipulating and proposing to her.

Later, Joe sets up cameras in his apartment in an attempt to get a taped confession out of Rhys once he comes over. But Rhys quickly notices that he’s being recorded and Joe’s plan fails. Rhys then shows Joe Marienne’s passport and lets him know that if he doesn’t kill Tom within 24 hours, he’s going to kill Marienne. So now Joe decides that he must kill Tom to save Marienne.

Joe invites Tom to the university to kill him since the rooms have no cameras. But, as Joe approaches Tom to stab him with a knife, Tom turns around and realizes what Joe is about to do. So Tom starts talking to Joe about Rhys and then brings up Love again. He tells Joe he believes he killed Love, but knowing this doesn’t seem to bother him. In fact, Tom basically applauds Joe for committing the murder and getting away with it. He then tells Joe that he can help him take down Rhys.

Tom tells Joe that Rhys is hiding at his ex-wife’s house after being accused of fraud. He explains how Rhys is alone and unprotected at his ex-wife’s house. Joe realizes Tom is telling him this information because he wants him to kill Rhys. Tom gives Joe the address to Rhys’s ex-wife’s house and then leaves.

At Joe’s apartment, Nadia breaks in to find information on him. She finds a book and opens it to find a key. Then, she receives photos from Edward of Joe walking down the street with a bag of food from an Indian restaurant. Yes, it’s the same restaurant that Joe and Kate visited on their first date. Nadia decides to visit the Indian restaurant but doesn’t find anything. When she looks around, she sees an abandoned building covered with caution tape and proceeds to enter. This is also the same abandoned building that Kate pointed out to Joe on their first date.

Meanwhile, Joe visits Rhys’s ex-wife’s house to capture Rhys and torture him until he gives information on Marienne’s whereabouts. But Rhys claims he doesn’t know who Marienne is. This angers Joe, and he starts strangling Rhys until he dies. Then, a person that looks exactly like Rhys walks in and talks to Joe. Joe thinks he’s hallucinating, but the Rhys clone tells him he really killed him. He also tells Joe that Marienne is locked up in a cage somewhere.

Back at the abandoned building, Nadia walks into the basement and sees Marienne locked up in a cage. The episode then cuts to the credits.

You season 4 episode 8 recap: “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”

The eighth episode begins with a flashback of the day Marienne left Paris to go to London for the art fair. We rewatch the scene where Joe finds Marienne at the art fair and then where they have a conversation on the stairwell. We even rewatch the scene where Joe takes Marienne’s necklace. However, what we didn’t see in a previous episode was what happened to Marienne after Joe took her necklace. This episode shows what happened to Marienne.

After Joe steals Marienne’s necklace, he doesn’t let her get on the train like we were led to believe in episode 1. Instead, he puts something in her drink to drug her. Once Marienne wakes up, she finds herself strapped to a chair in an apartment. Joe makes his presence known, but he’s acting completely different than how he’s been acting in previous episodes this season. He appears zoned out and detached from reality. You could even say he looks like his old self from seasons 1 and 2. He’s also a big fan of Rhys, which is weird in itself.

Marienne begs Joe to let her go so she can be with her daughter, but Joe doesn’t listen to her pleas and instead keeps her at the apartment for a long time. One day, Joe puts Marienne in a crate and brings her to the abandoned building from the previous episode. As Joe tries to put Marienne in the cage, she tries to fight him off but fails. Joe leaves Marienne in the cage and constantly brings her food until one day he stops.

Then, we cut to the present time when Nadia finds Marienne in the cage. In the next scene, we go back to Joe and Rhys’s clone talking. Rhys’s clone explains that he’s not the one who kidnapped Marienne and locked her in the cage. He tells Joe that he did, but Joe refuses to believe he would hurt Marienne. Rhys’s clone tells Joe he needs to bury his body and then vanishes in thin air. Now we know Rhys doesn’t actually have a clone. Joe imagines he’s talking to Rhys. This is more proof that Joe is mentally unstable and back to his old ways.

Later, at Joe’s apartment, Joe and an imagined Rhys continue their conversation from earlier. Rhys explains to Joe that he didn’t actually meet him until he killed him. So all those times Joe thought he was talking to Rhys, he was actually talking to no one. Joe also imagined the texts he was receiving from Rhys.

Rhys explains that Joe imagined him as the killer because he wanted so badly to rid himself of his old ways. Joe wanted to show he was a changed man and didn’t want to see himself as a serial killer anymore, so he imagined that the person he was obsessed with was the killer instead. But Joe was actually doing the dirty work all along. Basically, imagined Rhys is supposed to be the bad part of Joe he’s trying so desperately to get rid of. Joe spends the rest of the episode trying to find where he put Marienne.

Back at the abandoned building, Nadia returns and tells Marienne she has a plan to get her out of the cage. Then, Joe finds the abandoned building and turns the knob on the door. Will Joe catch Nadia? Find out in episode 9!

You season 4 episode 9 recap: “She’s Not There”

Trigger Warning: Suicide

We’ve reached the penultimate episode of You season 4, and as expected it’s pretty eventful. Joe finally finds Marienne after Rhys (in his head) leads him, and he’s horrified by what he’s done. He apologizes to Marienne and tells her he’s going to get her out of there. Unfortunately, he can’t help her now, though, because he has a wedding to go to. Yep, Phoebe and Adam’s wedding.

Nadia comes out of hiding and wants to help Marienne, but Marienne tells her they can’t call the cops because as long as Joe’s alive he’ll continue to come after her. She doesn’t want to do anything that’ll jeopardize her life or her daughter’s. Desperate to figure out a plan, Marienne says she will kill Joe if that’s what it takes. Nadia reveals she can get ketamine from her boyfriend Edward to knock Joe out and a drill to open up the cage door. All Marienne asks for is a knife.

Adam and Phoebe are having their engagement party/surprise wedding at Sundry House, and while Kate is there waiting for Joe she overhears Adam talking to someone, bragging about all the money he’ll have once he marries Phoebe. He says he’ll expand Sundry House to more locations once he gets her money. Kate is appalled and wants to go tell Phoebe immediately. But Phoebe’s already too far gone to do anything about it.

When Kate finds Phoebe, she’s doing cocaine and drinking, leaving Kate very concerned. Kate tells her about the conversation she heard and tells her not to marry Adam, but Phoebe just gets offended and tells Kate to leave.

Back at home, Joe conducts some research on how he can leave the country after he lets Marienne go, trying to set up a fake passport. His vision of Rhys asks him if he’s checked his freezer, and when Joe goes to look, he finds a gun in there. Apparently, Joe stole it when he killed Vic. Rhys tells Joe he should just kill Marienne because she doesn’t deserve to suffer. But Joe disagrees. He tells Rhys he’s leaving to go see Kate one more time at the wedding.

At Sundry House, Kate fills Joe in on the Phoebe situation and Joe says he’ll help her stop the wedding. Kate pulls out a bottle of pills and says she found serious tranquilizers in Phoebe’s room, making her even more worried. Joe volunteers to talk to Phoebe if Kate distracts Adam, but when that doesn’t work out it gets them both kicked out of the party.

Joe and Kate walk home together and because Joe knows this will probably be the last time he ever talks to Kate, he gets sentimental. He says really sweet things to her before dropping her off at her flat, kissing her and telling her he’ll call her.

Phoebe and Adam officially get married, but Phoebe’s in really bad shape. They’re both heavily intoxicated, and Phoebe then starts freaking out and runs to her room. The next morning, Kate gets a phone call that Phoebe was admitted to a facility somewhere. But before she can get more information, she sees her dad Tom waiting outside for her. He tells her Phoebe’s psychotic break is all over the news and Kate then explains how awful Adam is.

Tom breaks the news that he’s there because he wants Kate to come work with him and eventually take over his business. Of course, Kate is against this idea and tells him that she thinks about the mistakes she made and hates herself for it. He tells her the life she’s been living out in London is “too small” for her.

Joe shows back up with food and coffee for Marienne, telling her he has a plan so she can be with her daughter Juliette again soon. Marienne asks him to check her phone for her, but when he does it’s seriously bad news. Because Marienne’s been gone for so long, her friends and family assume she relapsed. Her friend Beatrice texts her that she shouldn’t come back and that Juliette’s grandmother is bringing her back to the United States. This is devastating news for Marienne, who tells Joe he should just kill her because she may never see her daughter again. Joe’s vision of Rhys shows continues to tell him he should kill Marienne.

In an attempt to get Rhys out of his head, Joe takes Phoebe’s tranquilizers when he’s back at his flat and immediately passes out. But what happens next is way worse than Rhys, as he has vivid dreams of things and people who have been haunting him. For the first bit, he goes to see Marienne but cannot figure out the passcode on the keypad to open up the cage. The coffee he’s given Marienne apparently has peanut oil in it, which she’s allergic to in his dream, and she falls to the floor. She goes into anaphylactic shock all while Joe still can’t open the door.

Next up in his dream, Joe sees a vision of Gemma holding his key. The same key that should open up the cage door. Gemma tells Joe he isn’t willing to do what needs to be done, and then his dream changes to a room with an audience with someone up at a small podium doing a reading. This person turns out to be Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), Joe’s love interest from season 1 who he killed. She asks what he did this time before pulling out his key and then eating it.

The last part of Joe’s dream is a scene fans have all been waiting for. Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) is back! Well, sort of, because what Joe’s seeing is just a vision and not actually real. But Pedretti is back for this short scene. We’ll take it! In his dream, Joe sees Love sitting by a bookshelf as she reads and then looks up at him. He asks if she has the key, and she walks over to him, bringing up his violent behavior and blaming him for his “pattern.” She reminds him that he continues to hunt down women and kill them.

Love hands Joe the key but then tells him it’s not the key at all, and when he looks down he sees that she’s handed him a gun. “Somebody needs to die for this to end for good,” she tells him, holding the gun up to his head. Joe suddenly wakes up.

Joe’s dream is over and he grabs the gun out of his freezer, telling his vision of Rhys that he needs to end the cycle. He needs to kill himself. Rhys tells him he doesn’t want to die, however, and that all Joe wants is to just be seen. Joe tells Rhys off and leaves.

Meanwhile, while Phoebe is being treated in a mental health facility, Adam is being unfaithful. We see him in bed with a woman dressed in a dominatrix outfit. The woman says she invited others to join them, but it’s not what Adam has in mind. Two men walk in and take out knives from their bags, which prompts Adam to say his safe word, sweet potato. But they don’t listen. Adam asks who sent them and tells them he can pay them, but the woman says money won’t save him this time. They gag him and start beating him up before the scene cuts away.

But we don’t have to wait long to find out what happens. Kate goes to see her dad and shows him a headline on her phone reporting that Adam is dead. She asks what Tom did, and he tells her he did what she told him to do. Tom had Adam killed, which shocks Kate. She tells her father that she didn’t want him dead, to which Tom questions why she brought him up to him then.

Tom asks Kate to move to New York City with him, to which Kate refuses. He then drops a bomb on her and reveals the independent lifestyle she’s been living in London hasn’t actually been independent at all, as he called in favors to get her everything — from internships to jobs and even having charges dropped. “I keep you happy, I keep you safe,” he tells her, claiming that he owns her.

After a few complications, Nadia is able to secure the supplies, but before she can help Marienne, however, Joe shows up and finds Marienne seemingly unconscious on the floor. He opens up the door and sees pills on the ground, suggesting she overdosed. But is she faking it? The episode ends here before we can find out.

You season 4 episode 10 recap: “The Death of Jonathan Moore”

Trigger Warning: Suicide

The finale of You season 4 opens on a grim note following the final moments of episode 9. Joe fully intends to take his own life but has a few things he needs to do first. He wants to help out Marienne as best as he can, despite thinking she’s dead, and he puts her body out on a bench where she’ll be found. He wants to give her daughter Juliette closure.

At the university, Joe is in the middle of class when his students’ phones start buzzing. According to the latest headlines, Rhys was found dead out in the woods. This, of course, makes Joe nervous.

Nadia and Eddie meet up and Nadia has a lot of explaining to do. She confides in him and tells him that she’s suspicious of Joe, showing him an article about Love’s alleged murder-suicide. She takes Eddie to Joe’s secret building but once they get downstairs the cage is gone.

Back at his flat, Joe begins writing a suicide note and his vision of Rhys tries to talk him out of it. He suggests that maybe Tom was setting him up, but before Joe can finish his letter he gets a text from Kate, telling him to come over. When Joe arrives Kate is drunk, and she says that she visited Phoebe at the hospital. She also then explains everything going on with her father, noting she thinks her dad could’ve had something to do with Rhys’ murder, though he wouldn’t have left the body somewhere it could be found unless it was on purpose.

Kate explains how her father has been controlling her whole life, and that she was planning on skipping town and breaking up with Joe by text message. She admits she’s been falling in love with Joe and is extremely upset by everything her father told her. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Joe’s vision of Rhys asks him. Of course, he’s thinking they should kill Tom Lockwood.

And surprisingly, when Joe gets back home and Rhys suggests it again, Joe agrees. It’s time to kill Kate’s father. Joe puts together a plan, revealing that he stole Kate’s cell phone, and then sends Tom a message. He asks him to meet at his workshop, and Tom, thinking it’s his daughter, quickly agrees.

When Tom arrives at the workshop, Joe sneaks in and attempts to run up behind him, but Tom catches him. Joe decides to play it cool, claiming he was the one who sent the text message because he wanted to talk about Rhys. There’s DNA on Rhys’ body, but Tom says he shouldn’t worry about it. He has so much power, Joe won’t get caught. Before long, Joe is able to get the upper hand and knocks Tom out with what seems to be chloroform or another type of chemical.

Joe ties Tom up in a chair and when he wakes up, they start talking about Kate, but their conversation is interrupted when Tom’s bodyguard Hugo shows up. Joe quickly kills him, which makes Tom desperate. He tries to make Joe an offer, telling him he’ll fix his life financially and help him go back to America as Joe Goldberg. No more hiding. Joe asks if he thinks he can buy him, to which Tom says he’ll be saving him. But Joe doesn’t want to hear it. He puts a bag over Tom’s head and suffocates him.

Joe looks through Tom’s things at his workshop, trying to figure out how he can blame someone else for his death. He flips through his books and notes and figures out Tom’s bank account information, deciding to stage his death so it looks like Hugo was trying to rob Tom and ended up killing him. Joe buries Hugo’s body and notes that this will be the “last corpse I ever have to bury.” We’ll see about that.

The next morning, Joe walks out by the water and contemplates jumping off the bridge. His vision of Rhys tells him not to do it, explaining that everyone feels like a bad person and he should just get over the shame he’s carrying and move on with his life. Kate starts calling Joe, but Joe tosses his phone in the water. He then throws Rhys over the bridge, stands up on the railing, and jumps down himself. As he hits the water, he regrets his actions and wishes he had more time with Kate.

Meanwhile, Nadia and Eddie are investigating Joe, trying to build a case that he’s the Eat the Rich Killer. Nadia finally explains everything she knows about Joe, including the incident with Marienne. Now, the viewers find out what actually happened to their plan. According to Nadia, the two women also came up with a Plan B if Nadia wasn’t able to bring the supplies in time. That would be to kill Marienne, or at least make it look to Joe that she’s dead.

The women changed Marienne’s friend Beatrice’s number in her phone to Nadia’s, that way Nadia would be staging the text conversation that Joe eventually has. They also switched out the pills in the cage to beta blockers, which slow down your heart rate. The way Marienne and Nadia saw it, if Marienne took enough, it would seem like she was dead. Sure, the plan was very dangerous, but in the end, it worked!

After Joe thought Marienne had died and he brought her out to the bench, Nadia showed up and woke her up, saving her life.

After explaining all of this to Eddie, the two decide to sneak into Joe’s flat to try and find evidence.

Joe wakes up in the hospital after attempting to kill himself and his vision of Rhys is no longer there. Kate shows up and is angry with him for what he did, saying she wouldn’t forgive him if he died. Joe then opens up about his past, reminding her that he’s done horrible things. But he takes it a step further this time and confesses that he’s killed people. Kate tells Joe that her father is dead, admitting she knows that he made Joe kill Rhys.

Kate also explains that her father left everything to her, including his business and all of his assets, making her extremely rich. With this new wealth and power, Kate wants to help Joe. But he has to tell her everything. He starts by revealing his real name.

But while Joe’s life is seemingly looking up, there’s still Nadia and Eddie trying to expose him. Nadia sneaks into his flat and looks around, trying to find anything incriminating. She eventually discovers a box of Rhys’ things and takes photos of everything. She successfully sneaks out of the flat, but when she gets out to the street, Eddie’s nowhere to be found. Instead, Joe suddenly appears.

Joe sneaks up behind Nadia, scaring her and making her drop her phone on the ground. Joe picks it up and finds all the photos she took. He says he figured she’d be the one to figure him out, claiming he won’t hurt her. He offers her money to keep her quiet before the scene cuts away.

Through his narration, Joe provides the viewers with updates on the friend group, explaining that Blessing and Sophie bought Sundry House after Adam died, Roald shot his friend in a hunting accident but his family covered it up, Connie didn’t last in rehab, and Phoebe is now teaching children English in Thailand.

Marienne is back home safe with Juliette, but is disturbed to see a news article on her phone all about Joe, titled “A Brush With Death, a New Life in Philanthropy: How Joe Goldberg Escaped Killer Love Quinn.” This, understandably, makes her super angry. He’s gotten away with everything again.

We then cut to Joe and Kate being interviewed for a story as we learn that Kate used her newfound wealth to bribe people and scrub everything bad from Joe’s life. He can now resume his real identity and is being hailed a hero. In this case, money really can make anything go away. Joe is told his story is “incredible,” while the couple reveals Kate is now running her dad’s business and Joe bought a bookstore.

The show provides a flashback to Joe and Nadia’s conversation before the credits start to roll, and we find out Joe has reverted back to his worst, truly evil self. In the street, Nadia backs up from Joe and falls down on the sidewalk, horrified to find Eddie lying there dead with his throat cut. Joe hands Nadia the murder weapon, telling her no one will believe her if she speaks out against him. He frames Eddie as the one who killed Rhys, which provides a motive for why Nadia would kill her own boyfriend. As Joe explains, Nadia is now in prison but she refuses to talk.

In the final moments of the episode, Joe explains in his narration that yes, he’s still a killer, but now that he’s honest with himself, he feels okay about it. As he looks out the window, his reflection turns into another vision of Rhys, meaning he probably can’t shake his inner demons for long.

You season 4 certainly ends on a surprising note. Joe has always hated the rich and entitled, but now he decides to become one of them just so he can continue being a serial killer? I didn’t see that coming. The final episode sets up what should be an interesting storyline come You season 5. If the show is renewed, of course.

All 10 episodes of You season 4 are currently streaming on Netflix.
