Netflix shows like Outer Banks

Outer Banks season 3 dropped on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, after a 19-month gap between seasons. Fans from all over the world tuned in to watch the third season of the best teen Netflix original series. And, if you’re like me, you probably realized very shortly after watching the Outer Banks season 3 finale that you have a super-long wait until Outer Banks season 4 hits Netflix.

It’s such a sinking feeling! We waited so long to watch the new season, and immediately after,  we’re already waiting for a new season. We have to find something to watch in the meantime.

There is some good news, though. First of all, we know Outer Banks season 4 is happening. Netflix just announced the renewal prior to the release of season 3. That’s a good thing for a few reasons, which I will get into shortly. But, secondly, there are plenty of good, exciting dramas to watch on Netflix. Are they as good or fun as Outer Banks? Debatable, but they’re there, and we can’t just sit and do nothing for a whole year until Outer Banks season 4 arrives.

Outer Banks season 4 update

Outer Banks started filming in June 2023, which is more great news! It was supposed to start in May 2023, but it was delayed by a month likely due to the WGA strike. The cast and crew had been working in South Carolina before production shut down in July 2023 because of the SAG strike.

Until the AMPTP makes a deal with the SAG, Outer Banks season 4 production won’t start back up again.

It’s probably going to be at least a year before Outer Banks season 4 hits Netflix, too. We don’t know exactly when production on season 4 starts again, but we’re hoping it will be soon. I guess that’s the bad news.

The other good news is that the creators seem to be interested in Outer Banks running as long as possible. Years ago, they claimed to have a five-season arc for the series. Co-creator Jonas Pate told this to EW:

"“I don’t know if I could put a real number on it right now — how long it takes to get to that ending might expand, but we now know the shape of the end of the story. We’re going to take it as long as we can, for sure.”"

To recap, we’re getting more Outer Banks, and there will be a lot more updates coming soon. Now, we have to find some Netflix shows to watch while we wait. Let’s get the list started with On My Block. 

1. On My Block

Many of the shows on this list are about teens doing dumb things, getting into trouble, and trying to get out of that situation. On My Block definitely checks all of those boxes. The series tells the story of a group of friends trying to make it through high school in the fictional LA neighborhood of Freeridge. The teens get caught up in various things, including — you guessed it! — a hunt for lost treasure! Well, it’s not exactly treasure, but it’s money!

There are four seasons of On My Block available to stream on Netflix, and they’re pretty short seasons. You can binge-watch the full series in a weekend or week while you wait for the new season of Outer Banks. 

Unfortunately, the show ended after season 4, but Netflix ordered a spinoff of On My Block, which is called Freeridge. It was canceled after one season on the streaming service.
