Netflix became famous not just because it was the first major streaming service of its kind, but also because it has always had a vast catalog of new and old content. Every month, Netflix adds content to its catalog and removes stuff that has been streaming for a while.

The content changes often to keep subscribers engaged and offer them different options. Usually, the first of the month brings in 10-20 new movies and some older television seasons, while the last day of the month marks the exit of several items.

Why does stuff leave Netflix? Well, unless it was produced in-house by Netflix, the company doesn’t own the content available on the app, so they have to pay licensing fees to stream things.

For instance, if Netflix wants to add an old Universal Studios movie, it will cost them money, and they make a deal to stream the movie for a certain amount of time, maybe a few months or even years. Once the deal ends, Netflix is obligated to remove the content or renew the deal to keep it longer.

What time do movies and shows leave Netflix?

Netflix content departs the streaming service at the same time that new things arrive, 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET. So if a movie says the “last day to watch” is on January 31, then that means the last day you can watch it is at 11:59 p.m. PT on January 31.

Technically, because of the time difference, content is available until the following day on the East Coast, so the movie leaving January 31 could be viewed up until 2:59 a.m. ET on February 1.

However, even though this is the standard rule of thumb for Netflix, there are always occasional exceptions to the rule. Once in a while, content is removed before the aforementioned time. But in general, you want to watch whatever it is you’re planning to watch by midnight the day listed as the last day to watch it.

Usually, Netflix tells viewers when something is about to expire. Once the expiration date is within a few weeks, the item in question will receive a note on its catalog entry noting when it is exiting the streaming service so you can plan accordingly.
