Black-ish creator Kenya Barris makes his feature directorial debut with the Netflix comedy film You People, premiering on Jan. 27. Stacked with an incredible ensemble of comedic actors like Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill (who also co-wrote the script with Barris), Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Duchovny, and more, You People is shaping up to be a hilarious romantic comedy perfect for the most romantic time of year.

Are you interested in watching You People this weekend but unsure if the film will be suitable for a family movie night? Here’s what we know about the movie’s age rating and more.

You People parents guide and age rating

You People has an R rating, meaning it’s inappropriate for children. According to the official MPAA rating guide, R-rated movies are “restricted,” meaning they are not intended for viewers under 17 unless they have an adult with them.

According to Netflix, the R rating for You People is due to strong language, some sexual material throughout, and drug content. Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill co-write the film, so if you’ve seen some of their other projects, you probably have an idea of what to expect from this film.

Is You People a family movie?

Netflix has categorized the movie as a romantic comedy with deadpan and irreverent humor. If you have older teenagers in the family, they might be able to watch the movie with you, depending on their maturity level.

You People doesn’t sound overly graphic, but the language and jokes are probably very mature. Barris has worked on screenplays for films like Coming 2 America, Girls Trip, and Shaft, while Hill helped write the scripts for Sausage Party and the 21 Jump Street films. Depending on how appropriate you found those movies for your family, You People might be okay to watch together.
