When watching any anime title, it’s important to pay close attention to the songs used in the opening and ending credits. This is especially important for a series as riveting as Vinland Saga, as paying close attention to the lyrics can help you peek into the mind of our protagonist, Thorfinn.

As you know, Thorfinn’s journey has been far from pretty. From watching his loved ones get brutally murdered to then taking the lives of someone else’s loved ones, this character is complex yet tragic, hence why the songs used in the sophomore season were carefully chosen to capture Thorfinn’s spirit as a young adult.

What songs are being played in the opening and ending credits of Vinland Saga season 2? Read on to find out!

Vinland Saga season 2 ending song

The moving song that plays at the end is called “Without Love” and it is by LMYK.

LMYK, who also lent her voice to The Case Study of Vanitas‘s ending song, aimed to put Thorfinn’s heartbreaking emotions into words, which is why the very first stanza you hear in the ending credits reads, “Time and time again my hopes are gone.”

When we meet our protagonist in season 2, he is extremely dejected and seems to have completely given up on life. Even so, deep down, he knows he is searching for something to live for, since a life of slavery will only lead to even more pain and sorrow. But will he ever find what his soul is looking for?

See a glimpse of Thorfinn’s heart-wrenching hope for a better future here.

To better help you understand Thorfinn’s journey thus far, here are the lyrics for Vinland Saga season 2’s ending song (via Genius):

"Time in time againMy hopes are goneIt’s like a never ending marathonI hear voices every nightOf the ones I left behindThat I loveI’m trying to find the placeWhere I belongUntil I do I guessI’ll carry onTrapped in every sacrificeFell like I’m gonna lose my mindNo freedom…(Without love, without love, without love…)I played the game of life and had a ballCrazy of me to think I had it allI kept holdin’ on to the power, thеn lost… my freedomI guess I had to learn…Therе is no freedomWithout love"

Vinland Saga season 2 opening song

The opening song, “River,” is sung by Anonymouz, the same artist whose song you may have heard in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

Like “Without Love,” Anonymouz’s piece informs us of how lost Thorfinn is feeling at this point in time. With his hands bloodied and his mind empty, Thorfinn is now an empty vessel of the revenge-filled young boy he used to be. He wants nothing more than to atone for his sins but he doesn’t have a clue where to start. All he does know is that once he begins the path to redemption, maybe he’ll have a chance to see the beauty in the world as opposed to the chaos he’s been exposed to all his life. But will he ever get there?

These feelings can be best seen in the first verse of “River” which reads:

"Water running stronger, rougherHolding on to (Any-any) anythingAll I want is to survive itIf I let go, will it be the end of me?Got to move on, held on too longSweep me awayOut into the ocean"
