Back in 1998, the Fox sitcom That ’70 Show introduced the world to fresh talent like Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, and Mila Kunis. Once the series wrapped, the cast went their separate ways, but Netflix later reunited Kutcher and Danny Masterson for The Ranch.

In the Netflix sitcom, Kutcher and Masterson played brothers, Colt and Rooster Bennett. The brothers come back together at their family’s Iron River Ranch when Colt returns to his hometown after chasing his football dreams in Denver.

Content Warning: The post mentions sexual assault and rape from this point forward.

While The Ranch lasted for four seasons (split into eight parts) and 80 total episodes, Danny Masterston was fired from the series and written out of the third season due to rape and assault allegations. Now in 2023, some might wonder if Ashton Kutcher is still friends with the disgraced actor.

Are The Ranch stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson still friends?

Even though Kutcher and Masterson clearly maintained a close enough relationship after That ’70s Show to work together again on The Ranch, the status of their friendship in 2023 doesn’t appear to be like it used to. Kutcher had not publicly spoken out about Masterson’s allegations or trial until January 2023. Likewise, Kutcher still follows Masterson’s Instagram account but has not interacted with him in many years.

UPDATE Jan. 31: According to a GQ profile on Ashton Kutcher, he and Masterson have remained in contact, and Kutcher still interacts with Masterson’s brother. Kutcher also commented on Masterson’s trial: “Ultimately, I can’t know. I’m not the judge. I’m not the jury. I’m not the DA. I’m not the victim. And I’m not the accused. And so, in that case, I don’t have a space to comment. I just don’t know.”

Why wasn’t Danny Masterson in That ’90s Show?

Danny Masterson was not invited to reprise his role as Steven Hyde in the sequel spinoff That ’90s Show on Netflix along with the rest of his former cast members. In spite of the character being absent and not making a cameo, the spinoff never explains where Hyde is in the ’90s and never even mentions the character.

In June 2020, Masterson was arrested following a three-year investigation that began back in 2017. He was charged with three counts of forcible rape, and though he denied the allegations, the case ultimately went to trial in late 2022. Due to a deadlocked jury declaring a mistrial, a second trial on the case will commence in March 2023.
