That ’90s Show has been enjoying success on Netflix as fans around the world meet back up with the old That ’70s Show gang, as well as a new generation of Point Place teens. But superfans of the original sitcom surely reveled in reuniting with Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp as Red and Kitty Forman.

In the new iteration of the fan-favorite classic, Red and Kitty take in their 15-year-old granddaughter Leia (Callie Haverda) during the summer of 1995. While she stays with her grandparents during the summer, she comes of age in the basement that raised her parents, Eric and Donna.

Even though the original cast members don’t make frequent appearances throughout the 10-episode first season, their cameos here-and-there are bright spots in an otherwise exciting new chapter of a well-loved TV staple. However, fans are spoiled by Red and Kitty in every single episode.

Toward the end of the season, viewers might have noticed that Red started using a cane when he walks around the Forman house. Why does Kurtwood Smith use a cane in That ’90s Show? Here’s the explanation the series provides for the character.

Why does Kurtwood Smith use a cane in That ’90s Show?

In the back half of the season, Red uses a cane to move about the house, and it appears Kurtwood Smith might have needed to use it himself. The series explains Red’s sudden use of the cane as an accident with neighbor Sherri (Andrea Anders), who ran him over with her bike.

The encounter happens off-screen, meaning we don’t get to see the accident happen. Television shows will usually use this type of exposition to explain something that isn’t integral to the story. Meaning, Kurtwood Smith requiring a cane needed to be explained, but it didn’t need to be a huge deal for Red in the story.

It’s currently unconfirmed why Smith requires the use of a cane. The actor appears to not have spoken publicly about it, and fans should respect his privacy. At the end of the day, we know the comical happenstance that caused Red to need a cane. Just add Sherri and her chaotic ways to the long lists of people and things Red understandably can’t stand.
