With Black History Month on the way, we’re more than excited to celebrate the powerful leaders of our past, especially because so much of African/African-American history has been buried and thrown into the sea of forgetfulness. However, thankfully, someone out there documented the lives of those before us, and now we get to tell these stories loud and proud.

African Queens: Njinga is a title that will be perfect to watch for Black History Month. Allow us to tell you why by giving you a quick rundown of what you can expect from this docuseries!

African Queens: Njinga release date

African Queens: Njinga will release on Wednesday, Feb. 15, on Netflix. On this day, you will receive four forty-five-minute-long episodes, so don’t forget to save the date, so you don’t miss out on a single second!

African Queens: Njinga narrator

Narrating this Netflix release is none other than Jada Pinkett Smith, who also serves as one of the many executive producers of this title. Smith has starred in many films integral to Black culture, such as Menace II SocietyThe Nutty ProfessorSet It Off, and more. All in all, we know that she will deliver a fantastic performance and an excellent docuseries.

Smith will be joined by more executive producers, Miguel Melendez, Terence Carter, Jane Root, Maxine Watson, Ben Goold, and Westbrook Studios’ Sahara Bushue. Serving as the writers for this 2023 release are NneNne Iwuji and Seasons of Love‘s Peres Owino.

What is African Queens: Njinga about?

African Queens is gearing up to be an anthology series exploring different African queens each season. But for the pilot season, the 2023 series will start with Njinga, the queen of Angola, in the 17th century.

"From Executive Producer Jada Pinkett Smith comes a new documentary series exploring the lives of prominent and iconic African Queens. The first season will cover the life of Njinga, the complex, captivating, and fearless 17th century warrior queen of Ndongo and Matamba, in modern day Angola. The nation’s first female ruler, Njinga earned a reputation for her blend of political and diplomatic skill with military prowess and became an icon of resistance."
