The newest season of Vikings: Vahalla made its premiere on Netflix on Jan. 12 and has been wildly popular with Netflix viewers. Soon after its release, the historical drama series climbed to no. 2 on Netflix’s Top 10 TV shows in the US. This series is a sequel to History’s Vikings, set 100 after the original. Exactly what years does Vikings: Valhalla take place?

Vikings: Valhalla tells of the stories of Viking legends Leif Erikson, Freydís Eiríksdóttir, and Harald Sigurdsson as they fight for glory and survival. The series does feature many historical accuracies but also allows for creative freedom by adding in some fictional battles and events. Vikings: Valhalla is filmed in County Wicklow, Ireland, at some of the most breathtaking sites on the island.

Season 1 opened with the battle of St. Brice’s Day, which is known as the beginning of the end of the Viking Age. The second season picks up after the Battle for Kattegat, a fictional battle added to the story, and will see the heroes as fugitives in Scandinavia.

When does Vikings: Valhalla take place?

The period during the Middle Ages, known as the Viking Age, took place between 793–1066 CE. The original Viking series begins in 793 with the Lindisfarne raid, an actual event that saw the attack on the church of St. Cuthbert. Vikings: Valhalla, set about a century later, begins with the battle of St. Brice’s Day massacre in 1002 when the English attacked during the celebrations held on that day. This series intends to conclude at the end of the Viking Age, marked by the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.

The series has been renewed for a third season that began production in May 2022. The creators of this series seem to waste no time in filming this series so fans could see the third season by the end of 2023 or early 2024.
