It is always interesting to find out where your favorite movie or series are filmed, especially if they are in as beautiful a setting as a story like Vikings: Valhalla. The Netflix original series is a sequel to History’s Vikings that is set more than 100 years after the original and marks the beginning of the end of the Viking Age. The new series is filming in several of the exact locations as Vikings.

Both Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla, were filmed in County Wicklow, Ireland. This location is the last of the traditional 32 counties formed in 1606. Named after the town of Wicklow, which derives its name from Víkingaló, which is Old Norse for “Vikings’ Meadow.”

Vikings: Valhalla season 2 will release on Netflix Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at 12 a.m. PT/ 3 a.m. ET, and you can see all of the beautiful filming locations on screen.

Ireland is a magnificent country, and Vikings: Valhalla actors Leo Suter, who plays Harald Sigurdsson, and Sam Corlett, who plays Leif Eriksson highlight their favorite filming locations in the Discover Ireland video below.

Vikings: Valhalla filming locations

The site Visit Wicklow has a fabulous rundown of filming locations for Vikings Valhalla.

Lough Tay or the Guinness Lake: This is where the Viking settlement of Kattegat is set. If viewed from the road above, the lake takes the shape of a pint of Guinness, with the white sandy beaches appearing to be the head of the beer.

Blessington Lakes: This body of water is the setting for several of the boat scenes of the series. Blessington Lakes covers 5000 acres and was formed 50 years ago when the Poulaphouca Dam and hydroelectric station was constructed. The beautiful views of the lakes can be seen from the road that encircles it.

Avoca Mines:This location served as the battlefield for numerous battle scenes. The mine site closed in 1982 and has many public hazards. Although it is an integral part of the history of Avoca, this location isn’t safe for public viewing.

Wicklow Coast: During the filming of the series, the Wicklow coastline between Black Castle and Brittas Bay was often seen spotted with Viking longships. Brittas Bay is one of Ireland’s best beaches on the east coast. It sports white sand and immaculate beaches.

Powerscourt Waterfall: This waterfall is one of the highest in Ireland at 397 feet (121 meters). This location is also the site feature in several other productions, including Moll Flanders, The Count of Monte Cristo, Ella Enchanted, and The Tudors. In 1944, the first movie filmed was Henry V, starring  Laurence Olivier.
