The Pale Blue Eye is a dark period film set in the 1800s starring Christian Bale as a detective. What is the movie rated, and is it appropriate for kids?

Retired detective Augustus Landor (Bale) is requested to assist in solving a series of gruesome murders. He teams up with a cadet who would later become the world-famous author Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling).

The Pale Blue Eye is one of the most anticipated films coming to Netflix in January, and parents might be considering selecting this movie for a family movie night. But is it suitable for all ages?

The Pale Blue Eye parents guide and age rating

Considering the film’s plot and ominous mood, you can probably guess that it will not be suitable for a family movie night if you have young children. The Pale Blue Eye is rated R for some violent content and bloody images. The “R” rating means the movie might not be suitable for anyone under 17.

Common Sense Media thinks 16+ might be okay to watch the film, but parents should proceed at their discretion. There is a lot of violence in the movie, including suicide, beatings, and some disturbing moments that include close-ups of corpses. Rape is also mentioned, and blood is present in many instances mentioned above.

In terms of sex and sexuality, the film is relatively chaste, although a scene shows characters post-coital, and there is some sexually explicit language. Some strong language is present in the movie, including a few uses of the f-word, but it’s not over-the-top.

Overall, The Pale Blue Eye is a mature, adult-oriented movie that probably won’t appeal to kids. At more than two hours in length, the film is also slow-paced and may not hold their attention even if you deem it acceptable for them to watch.
