When a military cadet is murdered under strange circumstances, a retired detective (Christian Bale) is called to investigate the case. He is assisted by another West Point cadet, a pre-fame Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling).

Below we’ll provide everything you need to know about the book the film is based on and whether or not it is based on a true story!

Is The Pale Blue Eye based on a book?

Yes, this mystery thriller film is an adaptation of the 2003 novel of the same name by Louis Bayard. Bayard is an American author who has written several books, including Mr. Timothy, The Black Tower, Roosevelt’s Beast, and more.

Is The Pale Blue Eye based on a true story?

Yes and no. The novel and the film are based on a fictional storyline, but there are elements of The Pale Blue Eye that are based on real life. Obviously, Edgar Allen Poe is a very real person and notable author.

Even though Poe was never proven to be involved in solving murders in any capacity in real life, Luxury London reports that the era in this movie is based on an actual tumultuous period for the author in real life. Poe really did attend the U.S. military academy West Point. He was later expelled from West Point for disobedience and neglect of duty.

Have you read Louis Bayard’s book? Do you plan to check out the movie? The Pale Blue Eye premieres on Friday, Jan. 6, on Netflix.
