Spoilers from Riverdale season 6 ahead!

Why does Riverdale season 7 take place in the ’50s?

As previously mentioned, Riverdale season 6 was one of the most ambitious seasons of the series as it opened the show to supernatural elements. In the five-episode “Rivervale” event, we’re introduced to an alternate universe filled with horror and magic.

Following the bomb explosion that ends season 5, Archie and his friends discover that they have gained mysterious superpowers. They later learn that the explosion caused a rift between Riverdale and Rivervale, allowing the latter’s magic to seep into the sleepy town.

The crew bands together to stop the immortal and powerful Percival Pickens from taking over and destroying the town in an effort to exact revenge for the town’s ancestors. Although the ultimately put a stop to Percival, he goes out swinging.

Cheryl uses everyone’s powers in combination to destroy the comet Percival sent heading straight toward Riverdale. While she’s successful in keeping the town and her friends safe, the gang finds themselves sent back to the 1950s as teenagers. No one remembers who they really are or where they’re from except for Jughead. Season 7 will be all about getting back home to reality.
