Although it’s music to some people’s ears, some fans will definitely be devastated to see Riverdale season 7 bring television’s craziest show to an end. The CW announced the seventh season would be the last for the hit mystery series that breathed new life into Archie Comics characters.
It’s no secret that Riverdale has polarized certain fans who haven’t been totally on board with its commitment to camp and out-there stories. But you have to admit that the show has pushed the boundaries of what to expect from a teen drama.
In the latest season of the series, Riverdale incorporated supernatural elements to tell its most ambitious story yet. Archie and his friends battle a new villain trying to destroy their hometown, making Riverdale season 6 a truly magical mess you have to see to believe.
But what can we expect from Riverdale season 7? Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming final season of the hit CW series, including its premiere timeframe, cast updates, season 6 spoilers, and when to start saving room on your Netflix watch list.
Is Riverdale season 7 the final season?
Yes! The CW announced along with the renewal that the seventh season would be the last for Riverdale. Even though the network ultimately canceled a vast number of its veteran series, Mark Pedowitz stated he believed in giving long-running shows a proper send-off.
When is Riverdale season 7 coming to The CW?
The final season of Riverdale won’t be coming to The CW in the fall season. Even though shows such as Walker and The Winchesters will premiere in October, Riverdale season 7 won’t be arriving on the network until sometime in 2023.
Although it’s been designated as a midseason premiere, that doesn’t necessarily mean the season will debut in January. According to The Wrap, season 7 could premiere in spring 2023, and that could mean anything from February to May (though we can’t imagine The CW would hold the final season until much later than March).
How many episodes will be in Riverdale season 7?
Although other final season of popular series have had a reduced episode count (see: fellow CW series The Flash), the seventh season of Riverdale isn’t expected to have a significantly reduced episode count. The season could have a full season of up to 20 or 22 episodes, but don’t expect to see 13 episodes in the series’ swan song.

Riverdale season 7 cast
We can assume the following cast members will return as series regulars for the final season:
- KJ Apa as Archie Andrews
- Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper
- Camile Mendes as Veronica Lodge
- Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones
- Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom
- Casey Cott as Kevin Keller
- Charles Melton as Reggie Mantle
- Vanessa Morgan as Toni Topaz
- Drew Ray Tanner as Fangs Fogarty
- Erinn Westbrook as Tabitha Tate
- Mädchen Amick as Alice Cooper
Two fresh faces were added to the cast in recurring roles for season 7: Nicholas Barasch as Julian Blossom and Karl Walcott as Clay Walker. Julian often butts heads with his twin sister and acts as a foil to all of the classmates, especially Archie. Meanwhile, Clay appears to have an eye for social justice and will have a potential romance with Kevin.
Why did KJ Apa cut his hair?
On July 28, KJ Apa shared a photo on his Instagram account sporting his natural dark hair color and a new buzzcut. Of course, many fans wondered if this new hairstyle had anything to do with the actor leaving his post as Archie on Riverdale. Where’s the red hair?!
Fear not! During his hiatus from the hit series, Apa is filming a new moving called One Fast Move, which called for a new look. Considering Archie’s longer hair in season 6, it will be interesting what length Apa brings for season 7. New year, new Archie!

Why does Riverdale season 7 take place in the ’50s?
As previously mentioned, Riverdale season 6 was one of the most ambitious seasons of the series as it opened the show to supernatural elements. In the five-episode “Rivervale” event, we’re introduced to an alternate universe filled with horror and magic.
Following the bomb explosion that ends season 5, Archie and his friends discover that they have gained mysterious superpowers. They later learn that the explosion caused a rift between Riverdale and Rivervale, allowing the latter’s magic to seep into the sleepy town.
The crew bands together to stop the immortal and powerful Percival Pickens from taking over and destroying the town in an effort to exact revenge for the town’s ancestors. Although the ultimately put a stop to Percival, he goes out swinging.
Cheryl uses everyone’s powers in combination to destroy the comet Percival sent heading straight toward Riverdale. While she’s successful in keeping the town and her friends safe, the gang finds themselves sent back to the 1950s as teenagers. No one remembers who they really are or where they’re from except for Jughead. Season 7 will be all about getting back home to reality.
Riverdale season 7 Netflix release updates
When Riverdale season 7 comes to Netflix in the United States will depend on when the season both premieres and ends. The final season will arrive on Netflix eight days after the series finale airs on The CW.
Since the season has been confirmed for a premiere sometime in spring 2023, Netflix will receive the last season of Riverdale later that year. Our best prediction would be that the final episodes will drop on Netflix sometime in fall 2023, but we’ll keep fans updated.
