Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the next film in Rian Johnson’s murder-mystery series that began with Knives Out in 2019.

Knives Out surrounded the death of mystery writer Harlan Thrombey. What at first appears like a suicide, albeit a dramatic and gruesome suicide, is later viewed with suspicion. Private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously hired to offer assistance, which leads him to believe there’s been foul play.

The audience learns early on that Marta Cabrera, Harlan’s nurse, played by Ana de Armas, accidentally delivered the wrong medicine, but Harlan decided to kill himself to protect her from punishment. What the audience initially thinks is a mystery-thriller about Marta trying to cover her tracks turns into something completely different by the end.

Knives Out received one Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay (Johnson) and held a 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Due to the film’s commercial success, Johnson turned a movie that wrapped up neatly (and didn’t lend itself to a sequel) into a murder mystery series.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery plot synopsis

The hold that Agatha Christie still holds over the murder-mystery genre is self-apparent. Glass Onion is just one of many whodunnits Hollywood has produced in recent years (Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, See How They Run, to name a few). And Johnson’s Knives Out series is meant to capitalize on this popularity.

While many of the characters from the original Knives Out are not back in the second installment, Benoit Blanc returns to solve this year’s case–much like Christie’s Hercule Poirot.

In Glass Onion, a billionaire Miles Bron brings a group of friends to a private Greek island. During the trip, one guest winds up dead, and Benoit Blanc is tasked with solving the case.

Johnson delivers another series of twists and turns that audiences are already raving about. Glass Onion was given a limited release in select AMC theaters. But it’ll be aired to a broader audience when it comes on Netflix on December 23, just in time for the holidays.
