It’s never a good time to hear about cancellation news, but it’s especially disheartening to learn that your favorite show has been canceled at the end of the year. Sadly, Netflix has opted not to renew Warrior Nun after two seasons on the streaming service.

Warrior Nun, which is based on the comic book character Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn and stars Alba Baptista as the main character Ava Silva, first premiered on Netflix in July 2020. The following month, Netflix renewed the series for season 2, which premiered in November 2022.

The loyal Warrior Nun fans that rallied to help save the series weren’t hoping for this outcome. What brought Netflix to the decision to cancel the series and not order a third season? Here’s everything to know about the cancellation of the beloved fan-favorite series.

Don’t expect Warrior Nun season 3 on Netflix

Unfortunately, as stated above, there will not be a Warrior Nun season 3 on Netflix. Because the series is a Netflix original, it’s unlikely that the series could find a new home with another streaming service or network. In these strange streaming times, everything remains uncertain.

However, we have seen how fans can rally together to help bring closure to their favorite shows with wrap up movies, as they did with NBC’s Timeless and Netflix’s own Sense8. Recently, Netflix hasn’t reversed its cancellation of an original in spite of fan demand for shows like Julie and the Phantoms and First Kill.

According to Deadline, the reason behind Warrior Nun’s cancellation comes down to viewership. The outlet notes that the show’s ratings performance mirrors that of other Netflix originals that have also been canceled. Usually, this has to do with the season completion rate as well as overall viewership.

After season 2’s release, the series spent only three weeks in the top 10 and peaked at #5. While that’s an achievement, it pales in comparison to the other hit series on the streamer that are bringing in lots of money (and it’s a sad fact that this is all business).

Admittedly, fans no longer want to hear the line of reasoning that blames everything on low viewership because it’s becoming a bit of a cop out. The fans know they tuned in, but they also know the streamer dropped the new season without very much promotion. It’s when decisions like this are made so close after release, without an attempt to market to a broader audience, that fans get hurt. And cancellations are starting to hurt even more because they’re hitting special shows that represent underrepresented communities.

Perhaps if Netflix had opted to renew Warrior Nun for a second and final season from the get go, thus not putting undue expectations on the series to suddenly grow its audience after two years off the air, fans wouldn’t have to so unjustly feel the wrath of the increasingly strict standards set by media companies as they continue to tighten their purse strings.
