Firefly Lane season 2 part 1: Here’s the full scoop on the new episodes

More than one year after the first season premiered, Firefly Lane is returning for a final round of episodes. Thankfully, even though Firefly Lane season 2 will be the last, Netflix supersized the season to bring fans 16 new episodes. The sophomore season will be split into two parts, with Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 premiering this December on Netflix.

Firefly Lane season 1 ending explained

Firefly Lane season 1 ended with several huge cliffhangers, the biggest of which is that Tully and Kate had a massive falling out in 2005 that led to the dissolution of their friendship.

The season 1 finale teased that Tully did something significant to betray Kate, leaving their friendship broken beyond repair. But surely that can’t be the end of the Firefly Lane girls, right? Whatever happened between them, we know it occurred sometime in 2004 or 2005, before Kate’s dad, Bud, died.

The other big cliffhanger relates to Johnny. We find out that Johnny was in an explosion while working as a war correspondent in Iraq. He got on the wrong side of an IED, and now his fate is left hanging in the balance. Is Johnny dead? We’ll find out soon. He isn’t present in the episode’s flash-forward to Bud’s funeral, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything since he and Kate were in the middle of getting divorced.

Tully quit The Girlfriend Hour after Wilson King took over. Her marriage to Max was annulled, but Tully offered a chance to start fresh if he agreed to meet her at the gazebo. Max never showed up. Speaking of spurned romances, Kate and Travis agree to pause their relationship and take things slow when Kate accidentally says Johnny’s name while kissing him. It looks like Kate still has feelings for her ex-husband.

What is Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 about?

We will find out exactly what caused the end of Kate and Tully’s 30-year friendship in the first part of season 2. Additionally, the next batch of episodes will follow Tully as she tries to navigate life without The Girlfriend Hour, and Kate must deal with the aftermath of Johnny’s trip to Iraq.

"What could possibly have ended the tight-knit thirty year friendship of Tully and Kate, our “Firefly Lane Girls Forever?” We’ll learn the answer this season — but first — Kate grapples with the painful aftermath of Johnny’s ill-fated trip to Iraq, while Tully faces a lawsuit after walking away from her talk show, and must start her career over from the bottom. This leads her to search for answers about who she is and where she comes from — including a quest to find the father she never met, against the wishes of her secretive hippie mother, Cloud.In the ’80s, we see Kate and Johnny first fall in love, creating more than a little drama in the newsroom where they work, as Tully’s career rises and she spars (and flirts!) with cocky sportscaster Danny Diaz. She just might have met her match — that is, if they can stop arguing for five minutes. While in the ’70s, teenage Kate and Tully struggle to keep their friendship together as Cloud goes to jail for dealing drugs and Tully goes to live with her grandmother, far away from Firefly Lane. As the girls face the tumult of high school apart, they know the one thing they really need is each other."

Is Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 based on a book?

Yes! The first book was based on the 2008 novel Firefly Lane and the second season appears to be adapted from both the first book and the book’s sequel, Fly Away.

How many episodes are in Firefly Lane season 2 part 1?

There will be 16 episodes in Firefly Lane‘s second and final season. Netflix split the second season into two parts. The first part will have nine episodes, and part 2 will have seven.

When does Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 come to Netflix? Release date and time

All nine episodes will be released on Friday, December 2, at 12:00 a.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. ET.

When will Firefly Lane season 2 part 2 come to Netflix?

We don’t know exactly when the final batch of episodes will arrive on Netflix, but we know they will come out sometime in 2023. Filming is complete for season 2, so hopefully, we’ll get the next batch by spring or summer.

Will there be a Firefly Lane season 3?

Sadly, no, there won’t be another season. Netflix has announced that season 2 will be the last, which makes sense because there are only two Firefly Lane books.
