What is The Wonder about?

Set 13 years after the Great Famine in 1862 Ireland, The Wonder is a stirring new psychological drama film starring Oscar-nominated actress Florence Pugh and it releases on Netflix on November 16th, 2022.

Pugh plays Nightingale Nurse Lib Wright, who is called to investigate a young girl named Anna O’Donnell (Kíla Lord Cassidy) after she alleges she has not eaten for months and has been surviving on “manna from heaven.” Throughout a 15-day examination, Lib must figure out the truth, even if it means going against the religiously devout community where Anna and her family reside.

Is The Wonder based on a book?

Yes, The Wonder is based on the 2016 book of the same name by Emma Donoghue, who also wrote the acclaimed novel Room, the film adaptation of which won Best Picture at the Oscars and earned Brie Larson her first Oscar for Best Actress, too. Donoghue co-wrote The Wonder screenplay with film director Sebastián Lelio and the British playwright Alice Birch.

While not based on a true story, Donoghue was inspired by a real phenomenon known as the “fasting girls” that dates back to the 1500s.
