The Wonder on Netflix parents guide: Is it okay to watch with kids?

Florence Pugh’s second Oscar nomination is likely incoming thanks to her acclaimed performance in the new cerebral period piece The Wonder, based on the 2016 book of the same name written by Emma Donoghue.

Releasing on Wednesday, November 16, The Wonder is a British mystery film set in 1862 Ireland, more than a decade after the Great Famine. Pugh plays a nurse named Lib Wright, who is sent to a rural village to investigate claims that a young girl has fasted for months, surviving only on what she calls “manna from heaven.”

The Wonder seems like it will be a great film to watch on the weekend, but you might not want to select this particular feature for a family movie night.

What is The Wonder rated?

Just like Florence Pugh’s recent psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, The Wonder is rated R. Per the official MPAA film ratings guide, parents are strongly advised to screen R-rated movies first, or at least learn more about them before showing them to anyone under the age of 17. Pugh’s latest film received an R rating due to some scenes of sexuality, drug use, adult themes, and strong language.

According to Common Sense Media, The Wonder involves a few sex scenes and references to child sex abuse. One of the characters occasionally ingests opium, and there are several uses of curse words throughout. The thematic material present in The Wonder related to religion and sexuality might be too mature for younger viewers to understand.

Given that the subject matter revolves around an 11-year-old girl who refuses to eat, some scenes might be distressing for kids to see.

One of the best ways to determine whether or not a movie will be appropriate is by watching the trailer. Trailers don’t tell you everything and can sometimes be misleading, but watching them usually gives viewers insight into a film’s overall tone, plot, and maturity level.
