When Charles and Diana exchanged their I Do’s on July 29, 1981, in front of nearly one billion viewers across the globe, no one could have predicted how quickly the couple’s relationship would fall apart — well, at least those on the outside looking in.

As we would learn, there were doubts about their future before the pair even walked down the aisle, and it didn’t take long for the cracks in the foundation to become evident… and eventually leave to the end of the marriage.

Across the fifth season of The Crownfans get the chance to see Charles and Diana’s relationship reach its end. In fact, you might find yourself asking about the timing of when the pair officially got divorced as soon as you begin the first episode. After all, I know I did.

The season makes it clear right from the first episode of the season that Charles and Diana’s relationship is on the rocks, but what’s unclear for those not familiar with the exact timeline of their history is when the pair sign on the dotted line and end their marriage.

When did Charles and Diana divorce?

Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially ended their marriage in August 1996, roughly two months after Queen Elizabeth II urged the couple to formally end their marriage after it had become clear there a reconciliation between the pair was not possible.

While Charles and Diana did not sign their divorce papers until August 1996 after reaching a final agreement that was suitable to both sides, the pair formally separated four years earlier. In 1992, Charles and Diana announced their separation but continued their royal duties and remained married.

As part of the divorce settlement, Diana relinquished her formal title of “Her Royal Highness” and any future claims to the British throne. In return, Diana received a sizable settlement, retained her title as the “Princess of Wales,” and was able to keep her apartments at Kensington Palace.
