At long last, one of Netflix’s best originals has returned today with the release of The Crown season 5. The Emmy award-winning historical drama chronicles the British Monarchy, following prominent figures in Royal Family history such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Princess Margaret, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, and many more. This time around, we focus on the years 1991-1997 as we watch Charles and Diana’s marriage crumble and the queen face more political battles.

Minor spoilers for The Crown season 5 below.

Many people have been looking forward to seeing how The Crown depicts Princess Diana’s final years, which though riddled with controversy and hardships, also included wonderful moments with her children, activism, and travels around the world. Actress Elizabeth Debicki replaces Emma Corrin for the aged-up version of Diana in season 5.

Now that The Crown season 5 is streaming on Netflix, you might be wondering how far into Diana’s life the new episodes cover. Is her death depicted in the finale, or will that happen in the sixth and final season of the Netflix show?

Does Princess Diana die in The Crown season 5?

Princess Diana’s death is not covered in the new season. The Crown season 5 concludes around the summer of 1997, with Diana getting ready for a trip out to Saint-Tropez, France, after being invited by Mohamed Al-Fayed. After doing some research, it looks like this trip took place in July 1997, according to Good Housekeeping, over a month before her death.

Diana’s untimely death came in the early hours of Aug. 31, 1997, after suffering injuries from a car accident. She and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, were being driven in Paris, France when they started speeding away from paparazzi determined to take photos of the new couple. This led to a major car crash, which saw Dodi and the driver, Henri Paul, dying at the scene. Diana was transported to a hospital where she passed away. Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was the only survivor.

Because The Crown season 5 ends before that tragic night, we can expect Diana’s passing to be a major part of the sixth season. However, it’s already been reported that we will not see her death on-screen. A Netflix rep shared with the New York Daily News: “[Season 6] will not depict the crash, contrary to some reports. It will be scenes covering the lead up to, and [the] aftermath.”

Debicki is set to reprise her role in The Crown season 6, though we don’t know for how many episodes.

All 10 episodes of The Crown season 5 are now streaming on Netflix.
