Big changes are coming for the world’s favorite one-hit-wonder girl group! Peacock’s hidden gem comedy series Girls5eva will be spreading its wings and flying to Netflix for its third season. Girls5eva season 3 has officially been given the green light and a new home.

The series first premiered in May 2021 on Peacock and comes from creator Meredith Scardino as well as 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt masterminds Tina Fey and Robert Carlock as executive producers. Girls5eva season 2 premiered in May 2022 and concluded in June.

In the hilarious comedy series, the formerly popular ’90s girl group Girls5eva reunites after a hot new rapper samples their one hit on his latest single. Getting back together to perform reinvigorates the group to make a comeback, which isn’t as easy as they think.

Girls5eva boasts one of the strongest ensemble casts on television right now, with the band being played the endlessly talented foursome of Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell, and Busy Philipps. Now we get to see them all back in action on Netflix.

Peacock’s Girls5eva season 3 coming to Netflix

Netflix announced the exciting news on Oct. 27 with the confirmation that it had picked up Girls5eva season 3 from Peacock. The move reunites Fey, Carlock, and Scardino with Netflix after the wrap of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s four-season run.

While Netflix will be the exclusive streaming home for Girls5eva season 3, Netflix and Peacock will share ownership of the first two seasons of the comedy series. Peacock subscribers will still be able to watch seasons 1 and 2, but if you want to watch season 3, you need a Netflix subscription.

According to Deadline, Peacock had canceled the series before Netflix stepped in to save the series for another season. Word of the cancellation didn’t appear to hit the news prior to the announcement of the Netflix save. It’s also the highest profile instance of a streamer saving an original show from another (see: rival) streamer.

The move to Netflix will be an incredible opportunity for Girls5eva to reach a wider audience, as it wasn’t regarded as one of the most-watched shows on Peacock. Being available on a bigger platform, that’s more inclined for niche comedies to have a better chance to thrive, could finally give the series the opportunity to land the major Emmy nominations it deserves.

Netflix has struggled in recent years to establish a strong comedy lineup with some of its biggest hits ending and new series not connection. But Girls5eva and Blockbuster, a fellow Netflix original produced by Universal Television, could very well be the change the streamer needs.
