Be sure there’s nothing on your calendar Nov. 3 as new comedy series, Blockbuster, drops on Netflix. The show has a total of ten, 30-minute episodes. So it will definitely be an easy binge-watch!

The new series stars Randall Park as Timmy, Melissa Fumero as Eliza, Tyler Alvarez as Carlos, Madeleine Arthur as Hannah, Olga Merediz as Connie, among others. You’ll recognize Park from his role in WandaVision, and Fumero from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Blockbuster centers around Timmy, who has spent his adult life dedicated to his love for movies. That’s what’s kept him at his first and only job managing his local Blockbuster Video store, Netflix shares. When he learns this is the last Blockbuster nationwide, he’s committed to keeping the store open and his friends employed. And this turn of events might even bring everyone closer to the digital age.

Blockbuster is an actual retail chain of stores in America that rented out movies and video games. Is it true that there aren’t any stores open anymore, except one, or is Netflix’s take just for story purposes?

Are there any Blockbusters still open?

The company was founded in October 1985 in Dallas, Texas. It even expanded internationally outside of the United States throughout the ’90s. The retail chain reached its peak in 2004, with a total of 9,094 stores between the U.S. and other countries.

Due to poor leadership, the economic Great Recession, and competition, the company suffered significant revenue loss and started to close down many of its stores. As of 2022, there is only one left worldwide.

Where is the last Blockbuster?

The very last Blockbuster that’s still standing is located in Bend, Oregon in the U.S.!

In 2010, the company has to file for bankruptcy protection, with satellite television provider Dish Network buying its remaining 1,700 stores in 2011. But by 2014, most of the 300 remaining shut down. The last store to remain was in Morley, Western Australia. It closed its doors in March 2019.
