As soon as The Midnight Club was released on Netflix, people dropped whatever they were doing and immediately began watching the new mystery-horror series. Co-created by Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong comes a show following a group of terminally ill teens in hospice care who gather every night to share sinister stories. The teens become a family and even create a pact that the first person to pass away would be responsible for sending the group a sign of proof that there’s life after death.

Major spoilers ahead from The Midnight Club

The story centers around llonka (Iman Benson), a teen girl who finds out she has thyroid cancer right before her 18th birthday. But llonka refuses to let her health diagnosis bring her down, so she finds a hospice called Brightcliffe Hospice. While researching the place, she comes across an old patient named Julia Jayne, who after living at the hospice was miraculously cured of her disease. After she was supposedly cured, Julia left Brightcliffe. Julia’s story makes llonka want to go to Brightcliffe even more.

We see flashbacks of a young Julia earlier in the season, but we’re introduced to her in the present time in a shocking reveal later in the season. In episode 9, Julia is revealed to be a character we already met earlier in the season. Who is Julia Jayne? Find out below.

The Midnight Club spoilers: Is Shasta actually Julia Jayne?

Yes! Shasta reveals to llonka that she’s Julia Jayne in the ninth episode. If you recall, Shasta is the healer llonka meets in the woods on Brightcliffe’s property back in episode 2. Shasta owns her own naturopathic company near Brightcliffe, but she has an ulterior motive for befriending llonka.

After a failed ritual attempt to cure Anya, llonka confides in Shasta/Julia Jayne about it. Julia tells llonka that she’ll help her by doing the ritual with her. Later that night, when everyone at Brightcliffe is asleep, llonka lets Julia and other members of her company in the hospice to do the ritual.

As the ritual begins, llonka notices that Julia is doing it differently than the instructions mentioned in Athena’s journal, but she still goes through with it. Dr. Stanton arrives in the basement just when llonka is about to drink the poisonous tea. She continuously yells at her not to drink it, and llonka begins to panic as she watches people pass out from drinking the tea. Then, Julia runs up to llonka to try to force her to drink the tea, but llonka backs up to the wall and hits her head. While llonka is unconscious, Dr. Stanton lets Julia escape.

Later, Dr. Stanton tells llonka that a ritual including a blood sacrifice will not cure a terminal illness. She continues and says that a young Julia was healed from her sickness out of luck or a misdiagnosis like Sandra. But like the Paragon, Julia believed a blood sacrifice would prolong her life. Dr. Stanton goes on to tell llonka that an adult Julia was trying to use her as a blood sacrifice to save herself because she’s sick again.

To sum it up, Shasta was actually Julia Jayne, and Julia was not really llonka’s friend. Instead, Julia was using llonka to help herself because she was dying.
