Unfortunately, we have sad news to report… We just received word that the popular teen movie, After, is set to be leaving Netflix this October. We knew the day would eventually come, but we’ve been dreading it. Read on to find out the official departure date.

After is a romantic drama film helmed by Jenny Gage from a screenplay co-written by Gage, Susan McMartin, and Tamara Chestna. It’s a film adaptation of the YA romance novel of the same name by Anna Todd. It’s the first film in the After movie series, which consists of AfterAfter We CollidedAfter We FellAfter Ever Happy and After Everything.

It’s about a studious young woman named Tessa, who meets a mysterious guy with a dark secret named Hardin after entering her first semester of college. Quickly, Tessa finds herself entangled in a passionate yet rocky relationship with the rebellious young man. Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin portray the roles of Tessa and Hardin, respectively. Joining them in the cast are Selma Blair, Inanna Sarkis, Jennifer Beals, Dylan Arnold, Samuel Larsen, Shane Paul McGhie, Pia Mia, Khadijha Red Thunder, and others.

The romantic drama was released in theaters in April 2019. Then, Netflix acquired streaming rights to the movie, and on Oct. 9, 2019, it was released on the streamer. Since then, we’ve seen new After movies arrive on Netflix sometime after their theatrical release. But why is the teen movie leaving the streamer? When will it be leaving Netflix? What does this mean for the other films in the movie series? We shared the answers to these questions right below.

When is After leaving Netflix?

The teen movie is scheduled to depart Netflix on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022. This means the last day to watch the film on Netflix is Oct. 8. If you scroll to the movie’s title page on Netflix, you’ll notice that there’s a removal notice for Oct. 8. So I hate to break it to you, but the movie will definitely be leaving this October. October is right around the corner, so we suggest watching the film as soon as possible!

Why is After leaving Netflix?

According to What’s on Netflix, Netflix only has licensing rights to the After movies for three years. So, what does this mean? Well, it means that once a film hits Netflix, three years later from that date, it will depart. Since After came to Netflix on Oct. 9, 2019, three years later would be Oct. 9, 2022.

What about the other movies? We shared the expected departure dates below:

  • After We Collided – December 2023
  • After We Fell – January 2025

After Ever Happy hasn’t come to Netflix yet, so we don’t have a departure date. Also, the last film hasn’t even been released in theaters yet. So, it’ll be a while before it even makes it to Netflix.

There’s a possibility that Netflix could renew its licensing agreement with Aviron Pictures and Voltage Pictures, which would keep the film on Netflix, but that’s not the case at the moment.

It’s unknown where After will be available to stream next, but you will still be able to buy or rent it through Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, etc.
