Netflix’s latest true crime docuseries, Sins of Our Mother has been getting a lot of attention due to the headline-grabbing nature of the case at its center. Often, Netflix docuseries and documentary features are about older crimes, but Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell have not even gone to trial yet for the many charges against them.

In fact, many people have been following this case from the beginning and remember the news breaking when Lori’s children, Tylee and J.J., were first announced missing. Things took an even stranger turn when Lori was spotted with her spouse Chad Daybell in Hawaii as if her kids weren’t MIA.

Sins of Our Mother can only go so far into digging into this case, given that it’s still pending and won’t be going to trial until early 2023, but it is a good refresher and summation for those unfamiliar. Cosmopolitan also published a very in-depth update on the case for those who need more context.

Perhaps the most interesting addition in the docuseries is the involvement of Lori’s only remaining living child, Colby Ryan, who provides background on his mother, his relationship, and his family history leading up to the tragic murders of J.J. and Tylee.

The 49-year-old is currently in jail as she awaits her trial date. She has multiple charges against her, and the prosecution has said they intend to seek the death penalty against her and Chad Daybell.

Lori is charged with three counts of first-degree murder for her children, J.J. and Tylee, in addition to a charge for Chad Daybell’s wife, Tammy. She was also charged with conspiracy to commit murder in relation to the death of her husband Charles Vallow and conspiracy to commit murder against her two children, plus grand theft by deception.

According to KSL, she is being held in an Idaho jail.

Sins of Our Mother: When will Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell go to trial?

Lori’s trial was supposed to happen in 2021, but she was judged incompetent to stand trial. A judge gave her 180 days to restore her competency, and almost one year later, she was deemed competent enough to stand trial.

Thus far, Lori has refused to enter a plea, so the judge entered a not guilty plea for her, while Chad has pleaded not guilty with his family claiming he has been framed.

Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow will be tried together across ten weeks in January 2023. Chad previously tried to have his case tried separately from Lori’s, but his request was denied.

Sins of Our Mother is now streaming on Netflix.
