The film is a dark and slightly twisted retelling of Collodi’s fairytale about the wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy. Set in 1930s Fascist Italy, this story shows Pinocchio’s dream become a reality as he proceeds to cause mischief and play tricks to his father’s dismay. The overall theme of the movie is love and disobedience as Pinocchio tries to live up to his father’s expectations.

Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of Netflix:

"Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world."
