Netflix is developing a darkly comedic take on Greek mythology called Kaos. The new show has been in the works for a while, but we’re finally starting to get more casting news and details about the series.

Developed and written by The End of the F***ing World creator Charlie Covell, Kaos will feature a talented ensemble cast that includes Jeff Goldblum, David Thewlis, Debi Mazar, Aurora Perrineau, Janet McTeer, and Stanley Townsend. Georgi Banks-Davies (Paper Girls, I Hate Suzie) has been tapped as the lead director of the series, with Runyararo Mapfumo (Sex Education) set to direct the second block of episodes.

Deadline reports that Kaos has been in development for a long time, having first been announced in 2018. The series was officially greenlit last year and is currently filming in Spain. Kaos was commissioned by Anne Mensah and Sophie Klein for Netflix and is executive produced by Jane Featherstone (Chernobyl), Chris Fry (Chernobyl), Georgi Banks-Davies (I Hate Suzie), and Nina Lederman. Harry Munday (Landscapers) and Katie Carpenter (Landscapers) are producing the series.

Kaos release updates

Since the series is still filming, the odds are that it will not be released until mid to late 2023. It depends on when filming wraps, how long the episodes are, and how much time it will take for post-production.

Kaos cast

In August 2022, Deadline announced that Younger actress Debi Mazar had landed the coveted role of Medusa in the mythological series. Hugh Grant was previously attached to star as Zeus but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Jeff Goldblum has since stepped into the role.

As mentioned above, Kaos features an incredible starring cast. Here’s the complete list so far:

  • Debi Mazar as Medusa
  • Jeff Goldblum as Zeus
  • Janet McTeer
  • David Thewlis
  • Aurora Perrineau
  • Cliff Curtis
  • Killian Scott
  • Misia Butler
  • Leila Farzad
  • Nabhaan Rizwan
  • Rakie Ayola
  • Stanley Townsend

Kaos plot synopsis

Here is the official logline from Netflix, courtesy of What’s On Netflix:

"A darkly comedic and contemporary reimagining of Greek mythology, exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld. Zeus has a wrinkle. He’s worried it might mean the end of the world… and it might. Because on earth, six humans — unaware of their importance or their connection to each other — learn that they are component parts of an ancient prophecy. Will they discover the truth about the gods, and what they’re doing to humans? And, if they do, will they be able to stop them?"

Is Kaos based on a book?

The series is inspired by Greek mythology, but it’s not based on any specific fictional book or retelling.

Is there a trailer for Kaos?

No. The show is still filming so don’t expect to see a teaser or trailer anytime soon. We might get some first-look images before the year is over though, so stay tuned to Netflix Life for more updates!
