The new Netflix mystery thriller Echoes is now streaming and stars Michelle Monaghan, Matt Bomer, Daniel Sunjata, Karen Robinson, and more. After binge-watching the twisted storytelling of the seven-episode season, viewers will want to know if Echoes season 2 is happening.

Echoes centers on twins Leni and Gina, played expertly by Michelle Monaghan, as their annual scheme to switch places — and thus lives, husbands, everything — comes to a shocking head when one of them mysteriously goes missing.

Ahead of the series’ release on Netflix on Aug. 19, the streaming service has billed Echoes as a limited series, meaning these seven episodes should have a self-contained story that doesn’t require a second season. But that never stops fans from wanting more.

Will there be a second season of Echoes? Could Michelle Monaghan be back as Leni and Gina in another season of the new series? Here’s what we know about the future of the story and the possibility of Echoes season 2.

Will there be an Echoes season 2?

As of the premiere date of the series, there aren’t plans for Netflix to move forward with Echoes season 2. The series has been designated as a miniseries, as previously mentioned, and although limited series/miniseries have returned for additional seasons in the past, that doesn’t seem to be the case with Echoes.

Warning: Spoilers from the Echoes series finale ahead!

In the end, only one sister remains, and she’s aligned with Charlie. Keeping in line with the theme of the series, the viewers are left to wonder whether the sister that’s secretly back in play is either Leni or Gina, since it’s not explicitly stated.

While this ending could open the door to another season, it also works as an ambiguous, open-ended conclusion that suggests one of the twins is still up to their old tricks. Sure, there are other lingering questions, but those answers are up to interpretation depending on what each individual viewer takes away from the story.

Netflix has had multiple limited series hits, like Pieces of Her and The Queen’s Gambit, but second seasons were not ordered for obvious reasons. For now, don’t expect an Echoes season 2 from Netflix and enjoy the twisty mystery’s wild ride.
