Who Killed Sara? and 4 underrated Netflix shows that won’t be returning with new seasons

There are so many shows on Netflix, it’s hard to know what to pick sometimes. Whether you choose titles based on reviews, word of mouth, or just how much the streamer promotes them, there are so many fantastic series that fly under the radar. Of course, there are big hitters like Stranger Things and Bridgerton that everyone knows about, but what about the less-talked-about shows that are just as worth watching?

Whether a show was canceled because of low viewership or concluded because the creator felt it was time, there are a handful of underrated Netflix shows that ended too soon. Here’s our list, starting with the Spanish-language show Who Killed Sara?

Mexican mystery series Who Killed Sara? came and went so quickly, you might’ve missed it. The thriller, originally titled ¿Quién mató a Sara?, debuted on Netflix in 2021 and already had three seasons under its belt when it ended in 2022. It tells the story of a man convicted for murdering his sister, although he maintains his innocence in saying he didn’t do it. As evidenced in the title, the show follows characters as they try to figure out who was the one to actually kill Sara.

We wish Who Killed Sara? ran for more seasons, and it was pretty surprising when it was announced that the third installment would be the last. However, we do get all our answers in the end, including who killed Sara, so it’s certainly worth watching. Check it out next time you’re in the mood for a gripping mystery!

First Kill on Netflix

Unfortunately, First Kill is the latest show to be canceled by Netflix. The teen drama premiered in June of this year and was axed by August. Despite poor reviews from critics, the vampire show amassed a dedicated fanbase who were passionate about it getting a renewal. Though the general consensus might be that First Kill is one you can skip, we’d say it’s underrated!

First Kill follows a teen vampire named Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) who falls for a new girl at school named Calliope (Imani Lewis), only to find out that she’s a monster hunter. If you’re a fan of supernatural teen dramas like The Vampire Diaries and The Order, you’ll probably like First Kill.

It’s sad we won’t be getting another season of First Kill, but it’s still worth watching if you haven’t checked it out.

The Midnight Gospel on Netflix

The only other show on this list to be canceled before making it to a second season is The Midnight Gospel. This one is pretty different than First Kill, as it’s a philosophical animated series that explores topics like existentialism, depression, drugs, meditation, and more. It’s an extremely heartwarming look at the human experience made by Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward and actor/comedian Duncan Trussell.

Famous actors like Stephen Root, Natasha Leggero, Pauly Shore, Joey “Coco” Diaz, and others voice characters in The Midnight Gospel. Damien Echols, one of the convicted men of the West Memphis Three who were released under the Alford plea, voices a character in one episode. Famed spiritual teacher Ram Dass plays himself.

The Midnight Gospel is one of the most profound titles on Netflix, but it’s not entirely surprising it was canceled. This show doesn’t necessarily need another season, although it would’ve been fun to see what they could’ve done next. Trussell confirmed the cancellation news on Twitter in June 2022.

Midnight Mass on Netflix

From modern horror genius Mike Flanagan, Midnight Mass premiered in 2021 just in time for the Halloween season. But despite the show receiving good reviews from critics, it never got the recognition from Netflix users that it deserved. Especially coming off how popular The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor were.

Midnight Mass follows a character who comes home from prison to a town called Crockett Island, an isolated, religious place where everyone knows everything about each other. When a mysterious new priest comes to town, miracles start happening. But it doesn’t take long until people start realizing maybe these aren’t acts of god after all.

Because Midnight Mass is a miniseries, it doesn’t look like there were ever plans for a second season to be made. But because of that, the one season tells a complete story with an extremely satisfying ending.

Mindhunter on Netflix

The dedicated fanbase of Mindhunter could only dream that there would be another season of this fantastic show. But unfortunately, executive producer David Fincher doesn’t want to make more at this time. The psychological thriller premiered on Netflix in 2017 and ran for two seasons before news came out that a third season probably wasn’t going to happen.

Though Fincher never straight-up said Mindhunter would never return, he has explained his reasons against it. In a 2020 interview with Variety, the famed director said that it was “an expensive show,” adding, “It had a very passionate audience, but we never got the numbers that justified the cost.” It sounds like the show also took a serious toll on Fincher, with him telling Vulture that he was “pretty exhausted” after season 2.

That said, Fincher has also noted that he’d “love to revisit it” someday, but who knows when that day will be? The Oscar nominee is a producer on multiple shows, and is helming an upcoming neo-noir film called The Killer starring Michael Fassbender.

We’d be shocked if Mindhunter ever makes a comeback, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth watching.
