If you’ve watched television at any point since 2005, then you have definitely encountered the works of Mindy Kaling. The comedy writer and actress got her start on NBC’s wildly popular sitcom The Office, and she has since built her own television empire.

On the tails of The Office, Kaling launched her own comedy series called The Mindy Project, which aired its first three seasons on Fox before making the leap to Hulu for its final three. Ever since the hilarious series ended, Kaling has focused on writing, producing, and creating new projects.

Ahead of Never Have I Ever season 3, which premieres on Aug. 12 on Netflix, Kaling caught up with Marie Claire to reflect on her career so far and talk about her plans after the Netflix series ends with its forthcoming fourth and final season.

While there’s still so much to look forward to from Mindy Kaling, including the second season of HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls and an animated Scooby-Doo spin-off called Velma (among other projects), she could be looking to jump from comedy to drama.

What is Mindy Kaling doing next after Never Have I Ever?

After listing the impressive upcoming titles soon to arrive from Kaling, Marie Clarie notes that the star, who’s known for her amazing sense of humor, has been pondering her first foray into writing and producing dramas.

Mindy Kaling counts Bela Bajaria, Netflix Head of Global TV, as a friend and co-worker after working together on Never Have I Ever. Bajaria notes to the magazine that a one-hour drama or dark comedy could be in the future at Netflix from Kaling.

How exciting would it be to see Mindy Kaling’s take on a drama or dark comedy?! We would love to see her scratch that itch and write an incisive and relatable story that only she could tell. Kaling also notes she’s inspired by the latest titles by Bill Hader, Michaela Coel, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, saying:

"“Their projects seem to be healing a wound of theirs. They’re incredibly personal, and they’re funny, but it feels like each project is making them grow as an artist, but [also] it’s something they needed to do, emotionally.”"

The potential drama or dark comedy series isn’t even in active development or a reality at all yet, but based on that description alone, we’re in for whatever Kaling has coming next to Netflix.

Speaking of what’s coming next for Mindy Kaling, we’re of course looking forward to Never Have I Ever season 4, and fans can check out The Sex Lives of College Girls on HBO Max. She’s also working on an adaptation of Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner for HBO Max, Velma, a romantic comedy about Indian weddings with Priyanka Chopra, a comedy about a female executive for the Lakers’ front office, and the long-gestating Legally Blonde 3 screenplay for close friend Reese Witherspoon.

No matter what she does next on Netflix or beyond, millions of fans will be ready to watch, stream, laugh, or maybe now cry along. But we’re keeping our fingers crossed for that drama series from Mindy Kaling on Netflix!
