I Just Killed My Dad on Netflix: What does negligent homicide mean?
I Just Killed My Dad is Netflix’s latest true crime series that’s made its way into the streamer’s Top 10 list. The three-episode show tells the story of Anthony Templet, a teenager who shot and killed his father in 2019 and turned himself in. Authorities found it strange how calm he was about the situation, wondering if he had any feelings at all. But as more and more came out about Templet’s relationship with his father, people started realizing it might’ve been an act of self-defense after all.
Anthony lived with his father, Burt Templet, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They had a strained relationship, according to Anthony, which got worse after Burt’s wife and step-son left him. But what exactly did Burt do to Anthony? That’s what Anthony’s lawyer, Jarrett Ambeau, was set to find out.

By the end of the three-part docuseries, Jarrett Ambeau was able to help out Anthony tremendously. He hired a clinical and forensic psychologist named Dr. Kathryn Lawing to evaluate Anthony, and she uncovered a lot of abuse. On top of that, one of Anthony’s co-workers got involved and found his birth mother, Teresa Thompson, who says Anthony was stolen from her at a young age by his father.
The story is certainly complicated and the documentary gets more and more interesting as time goes on. In the end, Anthony pleaded to negligent homicide, crime he would be able to expunge from his record, and received an order of probation. This was really great news, and it was obvious while watching the series that Anthony was extremely relieved.
What does negligent homicide mean?
If you’re anything like me, you had to research what the term “negligent homicide” even means. According to Shouse California Law Group, this refers to: “a crime where you commit some act of criminal negligence, and the act results in the killing of another person. While state laws slightly vary on the definition of ‘criminal negligence,’ it is generally viewed as conduct where a person ignores a known or obvious risk or disregards the life and safety of others.”
To put it in simpler terms, negligent homicide occurs when someone is careless with their actions which leads to someone else’s death.
Anthony was able to walk free after taking the plea deal, and in the docuseries we got to see him finally reunite with his mother.
