We’ve got some fantastic news for Stranger Things and Joe Keery fans!

Keery, who plays the beloved character of Steve Harrington in the popular Netflix show has been very busy lately making music as Djo (his new album, Decide, is coming this September), performing at Lollapalooza, doing press for the recently-released and acclaimed Stranger Things season 4 and filming a romantic drama film called Marmalade.

But between all of that, Variety reports that Keery also has landed himself a new role in the acclaimed FX series Fargo. Outside of Stranger Things, Keery has been in several other films, like Spree and Free Guy. But it’s exciting to see how many of the show’s talented cast members are starting to nab new roles.

Joe Keery cast in Fargo season 5

Keery will play a new character called Gator Tillman, but details about who is character is are being kept under wraps for now. He was cast alongside New Girl star Lamorne Morris and Never Have I Ever actress Richa Moorjani.

They join the previously announced trio of Juno Temple, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jon Hamm, who will lead the season.

According to Variety, Fargo season 5 will take place in 2019 “and asks the questions when is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn’t yours?”

What does Joe Keery’s casting mean for Stranger Things season 5?

Don’t worry Steve Harrington fans, Joe Keery being cast in a new television show shouldn’t concern fans too much. The fifth season isn’t likely to start filming until sometime in 2023, timed for a 2024 release. Right now, the final season is still being written, so the cast is free to explore other options.

But generally in situations like this, series regulars are under contract and it doesn’t seem likely that Keery would just suddenly bail on the show. It sounds like his role in Fargo is going to be in a recurring or guest star capacity, so he’ll probably film it before he even starts on Stranger Things season 5.

Similarly, his co-star David Harbour, who plays Hopper on the hit Netflix show, has also been cast in an HBO series in a leading role. Again, he’ll probably film that before Stranger Things goes back into production.
