What does Dream’s ruby do in The Sandman?

Comic book lovers, The Sandman is now streaming on Netflix. If you’ve read the comics, you’d know that Dream has three tools that are symbols of his power: his ruby, his helm, and his sand. Out of all of the tools, the ruby is the most powerful. But what does the ruby do?

Spoilers ahead for The Sandman

The first season centers around Dream (Tom Sturridge) retrieving the stolen tools that were taken from him and restoring order to his realm after being imprisoned for over a century. His first order of business is to find his stolen artifacts.

After finding out where all his tools are by the Fates, Dream sets off on a journey to reclaim each one. First, he gets his sand back from Johanna Constantine’s ex-girlfriend, Rachel. Then, he travels to hell and battles Lucifer for his helm. But Dream never gets his ruby back because John Dee destroys it thinking it will kill him.

John used the ruby to cause severe damage to people in the waking world. But that’s not what Dream intended the ruby to be used for when he crafted it.

The Sandman: What does Dream’s ruby do?

After John finds the ruby at a storage facility, he makes his way to a local diner to wreak havoc on people. The ruby has the power to manifest dreams, make dreams come to life, and even change the nature of reality.

John used the ruby to commit crimes and to reshape the world according to his will. He went to the diner, held the people hostage, and used the ruby to drive them crazy by using their dark desires and secrets against them. John manipulated the people in the diner by making them commit suicide, which was all for his amusement.

Once Dream finds John in the diner, he attempts to take the ruby back but is overpowered. Then, John decides to destroy the ruby, thinking that it would kill Dream, but it just returned his powers back to him. Ultimately, Dream shows John mercy and sends him back to the hospital.

The Sandman is now available to stream on Netflix.
