One thing fans might not have anticipated in Stranger Things season 4 was the return of the Steve/Nancy/Jonathan love triangle. Yet again, fans are fighting over which guy is better suited for Nancy. Are you team Stancy or Jancy? (Or maybe you’re ready to join the Ronance (Robin/Nancy) team?)

During a recent chat with TVLine, Matt and Ross Duffer clarified where they stand on the debate. They played coy, as per usual, and considering they created all of these characters it’s understandable that they’re conflicted on which pairing they like best. Steve, Jonathan and Nancy have all grown and changed substantially from season 1, so the “love triangle” has become much more complex.

In the fourth season, Nancy and Jonathan were separated the entire time, a far cry from their partnership in season 3. Each of them noted the struggle regarding their relationship and Nancy didn’t even join Mike on his trip to California to see Eleven.

Meanwhile, she reconnected with Steve as the two fought demobats and traipsed into the Upside Down with Eddie and Robin. Nancy got to see a whole new side of Steve, who has transformed into one of the show’s best and most beloved characters.

Moving into the fifth and final season, Matt and Ross Duffer have already teased that we can anticipate seeing a lot of the original season 1 groupings together again, which might cause some concern for Nancy/Jonathan, or Jancy, shippers.

The Duffer Brothers weigh in on Jancy vs. Stancy for Stranger Things season 5

When asked, point-blank, how worried Jancy shippers should be, the Duffers said that it’s hard to choose which ship is better because they “love all the characters so much.”

But Ross did note that Nancy’s perspective on Steve has surely changed now that she’s seen how mature he’s become.

"“The last time Nancy really spent time with him was the first couple episodes of Season 2, where he was a very different person. That was pre even his bromance with Dustin, so the Steve that Nancy knew and spent time with is not the Steve that we have all come to know and love.”"

Matt echoed his brother’s sentiments, adding, “Steve has grown immensely, as has Nancy, so what happens when you add that on top of the fact that she and Jonathan [were] separated by such distance?”

One thing is for sure. Stranger Things season 5 is going to be an emotional rollercoaster.
