Cobra Kai is arguably one of Netflix’s most popular shows, and many subscribers are eager to know everything they can about season 5 as soon as possible.

The show that started out on YouTube has quickly become a force to be reckoned with on the small screen. Not only is it able to kick past its competition, but the show has managed to get attention from the Emmys as the now Netflix Original has secured four nominations, thrusting the series past a simple reboot to a contender with a fighting chance.

In addition to the awards recognition, the show has had great numbers in terms of viewership and is absolutely a fan-favorite with many subscribers on the popular streamer.

Now that Cobra Kai season 4 is in the books, fans are, of course, wondering what the future looks like. Well, the great news is that Cobra Kai season 5 is coming soon!

Check out everything we know about Cobra Kai season 5 so far right down below.

Cobra Kai season 5 release date

As of May 6, 2022, we finally know when Cobra Kai season 5 is coming! As announced during the Netflix is a Joke festival, alongside a new teaser trailer, we now know the new season will be released on Sept. 9, 2022.

The first two seasons came out within about a year of each other, with the first coming out in May 2018 and its follow-up in April 2019. The third season and first under the Netflix banner arrived in January 2021, with the fourth run arriving that same year in December.

Based on its release history, we initially thought Cobra Kai season 5 could be released in December just like season 4, however, considering the new installment is already done filming, it makes sense that we would get it earlier.

In Dec. 2021, Cobra Kai creator Jon Hurwitz confirmed on Twitter that Cobra Kai season 5 had wrapped.

Cobra Kai season 5 cast

We can expect the main cast of Cobra Kai to return for season 5, which includes the following:

  • Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso
  • William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence
  • Xolo Maridueña as Miguel Diaz
  • Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso
  • Tanner Buchanan as Robby Keene
  • Jacob Bertrand as Eli ‘Hawk’ Moskowitz
  • Courtney Henggeler as Amanda LaRusso
  • Peyton List as Tory Nichols
  • Martin Kove as John Kreese

As of Aug. 9 when Netflix released the first photos for Cobra Kai season 5, we also know that Sean Kanan has also joined the cast, reprising his role as Mike Barnes from The Karate Kid III! He was a villain in the movie, so we suspect he might be one again in the show.

One big new addition to the lineup for season 4 was the one and only Terry Silver from The Karate Kid III. In every season, they seem to bring back a significant character from the franchise.

Academy Award winner Hilary Swank starred in the fourth Karate Kid film titled The Next Karate Kid. She played a troubled teenage girl named Julie Pierce, who was also taught martial arts by the great and wise Mr. Miyagi.

Swank has expressed some interest in joining Cobra Kai, the writers have acknowledged Julie is canon within the Miyagi-verse the show exists in, and her name has been discussed in the writer’s room. It would be awesome to see her in season 5 or season 6!

Eagle-eyed fans have also discovered that an actress named Annais Rojas has been added to the cast, but we don’t know who she’s playing yet. In Jan. 2022, she took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes photos and videos from the show.

Check out her post below, where she says (via Google Translate): “Grateful for experiences like this. Filming in Cobra Kai season 5 was an opportunity that I had together with people with common visions.”

Of course, fans have been speculating on Reddit who Rojas will be playing.

Cobra Kai season 5 plot synopsis

We have an official synopsis from Netflix which you can read below:

"Following the shocking results of the All Valley Tournament, Terry Silver is expanding the Cobra Kai empire and trying to make his “No Mercy” style of karate the only game in town. With Kreese behind bars and Johnny Lawrence setting karate aside to focus on repairing the damage he’s caused, Daniel LaRusso must call on an old friend for help."

The season finale of Cobra Kai season 4 was wild, which means season 5 will have to be even more eventful. As for the plot synopsis, we’ll get to see what happens to Miguel as he goes off to find his father, as well as Johnny and Robby’s newly-mended relationship. Daniel and Chozen will be teamed up, but they might not have to worry about Kreese anymore. We’ll also be curious to see what happens between Miguel and Sam.

Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg has expressed on Twitter that he’s for Miguel and Tory together, so the two reconciling is something that could potentially happen in season 5.

One of the other co-creators, Jon Hurwitz, told Deadline (via TVLine) that season 5 is “insanity,” revealing that “the story is going to go in a new way that no one can possibly predict.” As for Karate Kid fans, he also teased that, “maybe some familiar faces show up, maybe not.”

More recently, Hurwitz did a Twitter Q&A where he answered some of fans’ burning questions about Cobra Kai season 5. In one tweet, he dished: “The Season 5 finale is absolutely wild and unlike any of our other finales. We all love it.” When asked to elaborate on what happens in the finale, Hurwitz gave a simple but effective response: “People get hurt.” That sounds so intense!

If Cobra Kai was to include characters from The Next Karate Kid, which featured other big names including Michael Ironside, Chris Conrad and Walter Goggins, it would definitely be an intriguing way to continue the entertaining story. In addition, Julie would be an ideal candidate to form a new faction to add to the drama of the series.

Is Cobra Kai season 6 happening?

At this time, Cobra Kai has not been renewed for season 6, but we have reason to believe it will likely happen. During an interview with Collider in early 2022, Jon Hurwitz explained of their plans:

"“We’ve never said from the beginning how many seasons there would be. I think we always viewed it as at least six was sort of in our heads, but we’re still figuring out exactly what the length for that landing is for all the reasons that Josh [Heald] mentioned.”"

During Hurwitz’s Twitter Q&A in July 2022, he clarified about a potential six season: “We were misquoted in saying there would be 6 seasons. We’ve often said that we hoped there would be at least 6 seasons. But we’ll see.”

Fingers crossed Cobra Kai does not end with the upcoming fifth installment.

Cobra Kai season 5 will be something fans will not want to miss. Make sure to follow Netflix Life for updates as they come out.
