Is Purple Hearts starring Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine based on a book?
We’re only a day away from the release of Purple Hearts on Netflix. On July 29, the romantic drama film will make its landing on the streamer, and you will not want to miss this movie about a beautiful love story between an aspiring singer-songwriter and a U.S. Marine.
Purple Hearts is Netflix original movie directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum from a script written by Kyle Jarrow and Liz Garcia. It follows a young musician and a troubled U.S. Marine who cross paths, agree to a marriage of convenience for the military benefits, and eventually find themselves falling hopelessly in love.
Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine star in the leading roles as Cassie and Luke. Cassie and Luke couldn’t be any more different from each other, but as they enter into a temporary marriage, they eventually find common ground and fall in love. Other than Carson and Galitzine, Chosen Jacobs, John Harlan Kim, Anthony Ippolito, Kat Cunning, Sarah Rich, Scott Deckert, and Linden Ashby are also in the cast.
With so many movies and shows being adapted from books, people are wondering if Purple Hearts is an adaptation as well. That’s no problem for us. We shared whether Purple Hearts is based on a book or not below.
Is Purple Hearts based on a book?
You can go ahead and add Purple Hearts to the long list of Netflix film adaptations because it’s based on a book. It’s based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Tess Wakefield. This is Wakefield’s first book for adults. In fact, it’s her first ever published book. Hopefully, she will write more books in the future because we’d like to see more of her work on screen.
Here’s the book’s official synopsis via Simon & Schuster below:
"Cassie Salazar and Luke Morrow couldn’t be more different. Sharp-witted Cassie works nights at a bar in Austin, Texas to make ends meet while pursuing her dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. Luke is an Army trainee, about to ship out for duty, who finds comfort in the unswerving discipline of service. But a chance encounter at Cassie’s bar changes the course of both their lives.Cassie is drowning in medical bills after being diagnosed with diabetes. When she runs into her old friend Frankie, now enlisted in the Army, she proposes a deal: she’ll marry him in exchange for better medical insurance and they can split the increased paycheck that comes with having a “family.” When Frankie declines, his attractive but frustratingly intense friend Luke volunteers to marry Cassie instead. What she doesn’t know is that he has desperate reasons of his own to get married. In this unforgettable love story, Cassie and Luke must set aside their differences to make it look like a real marriage…unless, somewhere along the way, it becomes one…"
Based on the book’s synopsis, the main differences between the book and the film are the setting and Luke’s job. The book is set in Austin, Texas, and the movie is set in Oceanside, California. Also, Luke is a U.S. Marine in the film, but he’s an Army trainee in the book. This isn’t surprising because adaptations don’t always follow the books. However, this film adaptation only made slight changes, unlike others.
Purple Hearts will be available to stream on Netflix on July 29.
