In the upcoming season, the story will follow the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington (Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan). But if you recall, things weren’t looking too great for their relationship at the end of season 2. Also, Colin and Penelope were just friends in the first two seasons of Bridgerton. So it’ll be interesting to see how their friendship develops into a romantic relationship.
Now that principal photography is underway, we’re a step closer to seeing a brand new season of Bridgerton on our screens, and we can hardly contain our excitement. We knew that production was set to start sometime this summer, so it looks like everything is on track.
Bridgerton season 3 begins filming
On July 20, Netflix released a YouTube video of the Bridgerton season 3 cast announcing that production on the third season has officially started.
In the video, multiple cast members are shown holding up three fingers, representing season 3. At the very end of the video, Luke Newton is seen opening a carriage door, and then the camera turns to Nicola Coughlan sitting in the carriage. Coughlan tells the camera, “Bridgerton season 3 filming has officially begun.” Then, she looks at Newton and asks him if he will join her in the carriage. Newton looks at the camera, nods his head, and says, “Let’s go.” He enters the carriage and then it cuts to the Bridgerton logo.
So, filming officially began on July 20. An official wrap date hasn’t been announced yet, but according to What’s on Netflix, production will wrap by Dec. 20. It took about seven months for the first season to be filmed and eight months for the second season. So, if filming does wrap in December or before December, it will have taken the third season a shorter time to be filmed. This could mean we’ll see Bridgerton season 3 earlier than expected.
Bridgerton season 3 adds three new cast members
In a press release, Netflix also announced three new cast members who will be in the third season. Daniel Francis, Sam Phillips, and James Phoon have joined the Bridgerton season 3 cast. You might recognize Francis from his role as Dave Shaw in the Netflix miniseries Stay Close. Phillips is known for his role as the Queen’s Equerry in the hit Netflix original series The Crown. Last but not least, we have James Phoon, who is best known for his role as Hamish in the BBC mystery series Wreck.
Here’s who each cast member will play in Bridgerton season 3:
- Daniel Francis as Marcus Anderson – Marcus is described as a “charismatic presence who lights up any room he enters, attracting the notice of certain matriarchs in the ton — and the ire of others.”
- Sam Phillips as Lord Debling – Lord Debling is described as a “genial lord with unusual interests. But with wealth and a noble title to back up his eccentricities, he’ll have no shortage of interest from young ladies this season.”
- James Phoon as Harry Dankworth – Harry is described as a man who isn’t very intelligent, but his good looks make up for it.
Bridgerton season 3 synopsis
Here’s the Bridgerton season 3 official synopsis via Netflix press release below:
"From Shondaland and new showrunner, Jess Brownell, Bridgerton is back for its third season and finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence, Penelope’s attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly.Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he’s disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly.Complicating matters for Penelope is her rift with Eloise (Claudia Jessie), who has found a new friend in a very unlikely place, while Penelope’s growing presence in the ton makes it all the more difficult to keep her Lady Whistledown alter ego a secret."
Jess Brownell has taken over as the third season’s showrunner, replacing series creator Chris Van Dusen after his exit last season. Brownell also serves as an executive producer alongside Chris Van Dusen, Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Tom Verica.
